Hawaiian quilting
 

I live in the Mpls/St Paul area and I am looking for a class or classes in Hawaiian quilting. I have read a couple books but I still think I could use some actual instruction from a person vs. video. Does anyone know if there is anyone in the teaches this? Any help I could get would be most appreciated. Thanks

I have not heard about any classes available. It sounds like a fun technique, and I know the results are stunning. I am looking to try this, too, but it is a little way down on my list.

I have been watching my friend make a Hawaiian quilt hanging. It does not seem that hard. Perhaps you could look at some books and try a pillow top. My friend uses the back basting method of applique. Give it a try!

cut an applique just like the old fashioned 'snowflace' technique, baste down the center of each little piece of each applique... this lets you center the design and hold it in place while you turn under the edges of each piece and applique with blind stitch. at the point where you are all appliqued and blocks joined (i just do one block at a time and especially for beginners...do a pillow top to see if you like all this detail, my first was really a snowflake and then i use it for the month of dec/jan as it is just a cover for one of my regular lab). after sewing all blocks together, layer like normal quilt and do echo quilting or machine echo quilting... this is the traditional way but, it's your quilt and you can alter whatever part seems wrong to you... No Wrong Way To Quilt!

Our guild had a woman from Hawaii, who has her own business making Hawaiian quilts. She did a workshop but I wasn't able to get in as it was limited to 30 people. She gave a public lecture and showed her qwuilts they were beautiful. Pacific Island Quilts is her company. Her name was Nancy. Cant think of her last name. Very interesting.

Not practical but the only classes I took were from John and his daughter Cissi on Ohau. http://www.poakalani.net/

I think they are now at the Iolani Palace in Honolulu on Saterdays. I did feel the classes were a little clickish because it has a regular crowd and you just come in as an outsider but John Serrao and Cissi are wonderful.There are wonderful books avialable from John also.

Quilt University has an online Hawaiian Quilting class taught by Nancy Chong, from Pacific Rim Quilt Company. Nancy also has a DVD available on her website. I did one of her 2 Fabric Quilts and had fun doing it.

I know how you feel about a class - I started doing a Hawaiian quilt for my niece who lives in Maui. I bought two or three books on it...I agree that back basting is the way to go but you still have to cut out the pattern which is not easy. I know that "quilting University.com" has a class on Hawaiian quilting - I have not taking their class but it sounded good because you could go at your own speed.

I took two classes under Nancy and learned a lot from her. Enjoyed both classes.
