There was a story in my local paper today about the price of cotton. The cost of cotton has jumped from 80 cents in March of 2010 to $1.95 this month and is expected to rise another 10% in the next six months.
Stores in this area say the price of their clothing has jumped from 10% to 15% in the last year and they are forced to raise prices on clothing. Aren't we lucky we sew and if so moved, able to make our own clothing. I have just cleaned out my closet and am now going thru my stash for a new wardrobe. |
Gosh- haven't sewn clothes in years, but, may have to start again. UGH ! I'd rather quilt !

Come on, Gals. Sewing clothes is no harder than quilts. I have a hunch many of you are saying the same thing my guild ladies say. "I can't get anything to fit". Sandra Betzina has a terrific book on fitting EVERY figure. Like a new quilt pattern, you have to work at it in the beginning and start with something very simple. Went thru my Wally today and looked at the new clothes for spring and summer. The styles are very simple and the patterns usually only call for three or four pattern pieces. Those of you with a Featherweight. I started making my clothes on one as a teenager in the forties. Remember, a war was on then too. Oh, and practice, practice, practice.

I use to love to sew my clothes. In high school/college, I would cut a pattern on Thurs night, sew Fri and Sat...wear it Sat night. My Dad use to tell me I would scare off men with always wearing new clothes. That's what I did with my babysitting money: fabric, shoes and lipstick....things really haven't changed much in 50 years. Don't have to babysit for money tho...lol.

Remember, if prices go up on fabric, they will also go up on clothes. I looked at some tee shirts for $5.00 that were so thin I could read a newspaper thru them. Some real cute designs we can copy and how hard is it to make a tee?
