Welcome!

Welcome!
My mother also used to live in H'ville (after I was out of the house) but we all grew up in Decatur. She was right off Bailey Cove, near the Challenger Elementary school. Small world. |
Hi, I live in Huntsville. Do you ever shop at Patches and Stitches . They are a great quilting store. They are on Humes Avenue. Just stop in anytime and someone can help you with any questions you may have about quilting. Appliques are my favorites and, depending on the pattern, I applique with a blanket stitch by machine.

Hello from Harvest, AL. It seems we have several from this area. I'm glad to see it.
|
I do. I sent my mom a link so that she could join. She's the real quilter. I don't have enough time. I especially loved the log cabin star quilt I sawon here recently. It was gorgeous and the Lone star was my first quilt.

Welcome from Gastonia, NC.
Concerning applique, here are some great websites with information: http://sentimentalstitches.net/instr...hine-applique/ http://sentimentalstitches.net/instr...hand-applique/ http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/techni...que/index.html I'm sure other members will give you great information. This is the place to ask any question and there's so much support and help here it's amazing! ! Good luck on applique. I love to applique. I even use "used dryer sheets" a lot to help with applique. |
Great tips. I sometimes use "used dryer sheets" to sew on back of fabric and flip right side out.
Of course then adjust edges and press. Generally the shape needed is smaller than a dryer sheet. (I get my daughter to save her dryer sheets since I really don't use them.) |
Welcome from Kansas

Welcome from Madison, AL. I am so happy to see so many from our area.
It has been years since I did any quilting and then I did applique by needle turn. Now I am anxious to try out new ways so I am going to save this thread to refer back to. Lots of great advice from some talented quilters! |
welcome from Okla to the QB

Welcome from Denver. The easiest applique O have ever done is the eleanor Burns way. Sew applq to iron on fuse, turn inside out, press and wa lah! Then you can appliq as you choose!

pm me if you're interested either way. Oh and Hello from Huntsville also lol For applique I like to do the fusible interfacing way - fusible and right side of fabric together, sew, turn iron down, topstitch :) Easy Peasy. I saw it on one of the quilting shows on tv and haven't done applique any other way since - unless it is for a wall hanging - sometimes I do the heat n bond way for those. |
Hello from Illinois. I like the look of a satin stitched edge.

Welcome. I use fusible and the satin stitch for more detail. Working on a tute, maybe next week will have it ready. From a photo to a pattern, to the fusible, onto the fabric, cut out, fused to the background or stitched onto the stiffener then onto the background. Have to take lots of photos.
FUSIBLE WEB AND GLUE Two fusible web products that I prefer are WonderUnder and Misty Fuse. WonderUnder is a paper backed fusible and reasonably priced. The web is much thinner than it used to be, easier to stitch through and doesn’t gum up the needle like it used to (when a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol were kept ready to clean the needle) Less web means a weaker bond and pieces can loosen during handling and stitching. Permanent press fabrics and unwashed fabrics with starch or sizing do not adhere well. Do not use fabric softener before fusing. If the web is ‘over cooked’ the paper will not peel off. It is easier to just redo the piece. Misty Fuse is a very thin fusible web without a release paper. Several layers can be used without an appreciable build up (great with surface designs). TIP - fusible web can be used instead of starch to turn under the applique pieces for hand applique. When ironed to parchment paper, pieces can be traced and the center cut away leaving just the edges with web. Before fusible web, fusible interfacing was used. It is still used to back white and light fabrics to prevent shadowing of dark fabrics. TIP – if the web separates from the release paper reattach by lightly ironing it back on using parchment paper for protection. Roxanne’s Baste It or washable Elmer’s school glue are both good choices (for example on die cut pieces). The Roxanne’s glue leaves a residue when ironed, the Elmer’s glue does not.. Pieces traced onto fusible rough cut around them and ready to fuse to the back of the fabric. Picked out fabric. |
Not often. I usuallty go to the one in Madison or Athens. If I feel like a road trip, I go up to Franklin or Fayetteville. I only go to Patches and Stitches if I can't find it anywhere else.
