Help—designing paper pieced block
Our quilting group at church wants to make some blocks to send to a group in Australia for victims of the bushfires. The theme is tree of life. I found a regular pieced block and we have an appliqué block. I was asked to teach the group how to do a paper pieced one. I haven’t had any luck finding paper pieced tree block patterns online other than Christmas tree ones. I thought about designing one but have no idea how to do that. I can follow a paper pieced pattern but am clueless when it comes to designing one. Any suggestions where I could find a pattern? The block would be 12.5 inches unfinished.

Here is a link that has two 5" PP tree blocks that aren't pine trees. Make 4 add sashing and you will have a 12" block. Or you could try enlarging the 5" blocks. https://sewhooked.com/free-quilt-patterns/#plants

Raggiemom I hope this is going to help you out some. |
You might find this one helpful.
https://www.facebook.com/pg/Wollongo...iltGuild/menu/ It gives all the dimensions etc needed to make it. |
I also just found this palm tree pattern. Again not 12" but you could frame it, enlarge it or put 4 in one block. The pattern doesn't say the finished size, but looking at it I would guess 6" maybe? https://media.immediate.co.uk/volati...rn-56eddad.pdf

There are several in EQ8 . There are the usual Pine Trees, several Tree of Life and one easy Apple tree. All can be made any size. What kind of tree are you actually looking for? The actual Tree of life can be paper pieced in strips and then assembled. The Apple Tree is some what like a snow ball with a trunk and base.

This webpage has the same idea, but the block is a pieced block. https://www.bonjourquilts.com/tree-quilt-block/
This is a fun tree of life quilt https://i.pinimg.com/236x/d3/93/9b/d...lt-pattern.jpg Another website https://www.sewwhatyvette.com/tree-strength-australia/ Does it have to be paper pieced? The tree of life block is a good choice. https://www.patchworksquare.com/inde...ock&links=&id= A different idea on the same theme https://quiltinggallery.com/wp-conte...block-2011.jpg You could start with this idea and add clusters of leaves on the ends. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/16/c2...c0f523b6c7.jpg And how about this??? A collage of scrappy trees. https://i.pinimg.com/736x/8a/46/ef/8...t-patterns.jpg Last one... I can tell I am getting carried away. lol This Pinterest page has several unique quilts with trees that are more applique, but would be very spiritually uplifting. https://www.pinterest.fr/pin/4545117...11052/?lp=true |
Thank you so much. Quilters are the best. There are some great options here!

who are you actually shipping blocks or finished tops or quilts to?
I only ask, because in our warm quilters hearts we want to share that love with others in need, but shipping costs to Australia from the US are very very high and fabric is very heavy. Could you coordinate with a sister church there and just send money for supplies? Your $$'s would go much further. A 1/2 oz letter is $1.15 to mail. And Australian trees are far different than most of ours, is a tree really a thoughtful icon? Just wondering about the project as a whole.
