I started making fish for a wall hanging that has 1.5 inch squares . Any tips? When a sew the two squares together the material and thread bunch up and knot in the feed dog. It's such a darling pattern we started in class. I have to make nine more little fishy.

try taking a piece of doubled scrap material and sewing just about all the way through it (this is called a leader)don't cut your thread but instead butt your pair of squares up to it and start sewing. That should stop your machine from eating your fish.LOL Hope this helps.

Hi Kim,
Try putting your needle down through the square before you lower your pressure foot. That works for me.
Also, if you use a scrap of fabric as a leader; sew it and leave it attached when starting your square.

I have used a piece of copy paper or news print and then it just will tearaway.

Also try holding your threads. Pull them both back behind the foot and hold gently.

I made this pattern about 15 years ago and it's still hanging in my breezeway. I still love it and it was so fun to make and easy to finish.
