My sis is having her 50th anniversary soon. My other sis and I want to do a wall hanging... basically it will be 5 hearts on point with a border... Center heart will have name, date etc. My job is the border... I thought I would write one word on each of the four sides and applique it on... I have LOVE, DEVOTION, CHERISH, SUPPORT, FRIENDS, as some of my choices... any suggestions... Has anyone ever put words in their borders... all help appreciated. Quilter 1234 thanks

Do you or does someone you know have an embroidery machine? That's the easiest way to put words on your borders. Of course, you could always applique the letters or embroider them by hand...

There used to be a tutorial on Quilt Writing that was on a Pfaff website called "Behind the Seams". It's not there now, but basically, you just free motion write on your quilt. I searched a few places to see if I could find the tutorial elsewhere but no luck.

I did practice quilt writing and did a bit of writing on a Princess and the Pea quilt for my youngest granddaughter. Have a look here. If you practice on scraps first, that becomes a very good option for you.

One of the main tricks is to figure out how big you want the writing. The tutorial had you print it out the words you want on your quilt, from your computer on paper. Cut the strip of words out for the area that you are working on, tape it just above or just below where you intend to quilt write. Then you have that as a guide for spacing.

Have a look. I practiced two times, before doing it on the actual quilt. I was pleased with the results. In fact, when I do a kids quilt, I always try to quilt write in it, even if to add the name.

While FMQ I have put words in the border as the quilting.
I have also done a couple of quilts with names on them/in the border.

Both of these are just raw edge appliqued on there the one (Liam) has quilting over it. I quilted the blanket with Jordan on it without a backing (top and batting were quilted) and then stitched the name on over the quilting, and then added the backing (chenille).
