Help With Backing

I have a quilt top that is 112X112, King Size. How many yards of 115" wide backing fabric will I need? I prefer not to piece it if possible. I stink at math so your help will be much appreciated. Thank you

three and one quarter yds would be 117 inches. three and one half 126 inches. if they sell 115 inches you only need the length to fit. if not wide enough you will have to have more. usually 108 inches wide backing is available. perhaps you could make some more blocks to center down the back....if not, you will need fabric enough to go double down the back, so double the yardage quoted.

3-1/4 yards will give you 117 x 115 inches. That doesn't leave much extra around the edges, especially when taking selvages into consideration. It's going to a longarm quilter they will require 6-8 inches on each side. If you're quilting it yourself you'd still want extra to make sure you don't come out short at the end of the quilting.

QuiltsRfun, do you think if I purchased 3.5 yards or 4 yards that would be sufficient?

4 yards will give you enough length for the overage lengthwise. You have should enough extra to extend the width, assuming there isn't a one-way design to your fabric.

If you happen to have an I phone you can get an app by Robert Kaufman Fabrics called Quilting Calculators. This will figure all kinds of things for you. You just enter your measurements and there it is. Very helpful. It will figure backing and batting, binding border yardage, etc.

Uh-oh, I just tried to enter your measurements and it assumes a backing fabric width of 43 inches. I couldn't find a way to change it. Sorry.

I was able to change the width. Just click on the field and type in the number.

Personally I would use 44/45 inch wide fabric and buy 10 yards. Making the back in three equal lengths would give you the width and the length you need. If you used the 115 inch wide backing you would need to add to the sides ( which can be a real hassle).

I agree. I seldom use the wide backings.
