Shall I match the shadow fabric, the background or one of the block colors (may not have enough of any one) ?

i vote for the shadow color

bearisgray 05-19-2017 10:46 AM

I also vote for the darker gray shadow color.

nativetexan 05-19-2017 10:52 AM

well multi color binding works too if necessary.

Tartan 05-19-2017 11:20 AM

Pretty and I vote for the shadow fabric too!

daisydawg 05-19-2017 11:29 AM

I like the idea of a multi color binding.

Jennifer23 05-19-2017 12:12 PM

Oh boy, this is a great quilt!

I think the blue-grey from the background of the centre block (the red star) would be my first choice. It's a bit darker than the shadow, so would hold it all together visually.

Second choice would be the shadow fabric.

I really wanted to suggest red, since there are lots of reds in the blocks. However, I think that would draw too much attention away from the piecing, so I'm going to say not red. I think that a pieced binding might have that same problem.

I can't wait to see what it looks like with whatever you choose!

DeltaMS 05-19-2017 12:14 PM

When I don't have enough fabric, I sew together strips of the fabric I used and make my binding from that.

MadQuilter 05-19-2017 12:16 PM

I would do half in the shadow color to mimic the shadow part of the block and the other half in the background color.

Kitsie 05-19-2017 12:27 PM

I wondered about that, but would it be better with a wider binding?

I like this idea.

quilterpurpledog 05-19-2017 01:28 PM

If you don't have enough of any one color I would use multiple colors cut in lengths to match the length of the outside blocks. I would use a color from each outside block to be beside that block. I would add in sections of the sashing fabric between the colors. I think that using the fabric used for the shadows would defeat the effect of the shadows.

Kitsie 05-19-2017 01:41 PM

Thanks everyone! I've decided to go with Madquilter's idea of making the whole quilt like a block with its own shadow! Might make the binding a little wider but I do have lots of that lovely gray fabric. Will post result sometime soon!

AVFD215 05-19-2017 01:52 PM

I like the dark gray. But depending on the backing fabric, that might be an option too.

Kitsie 05-19-2017 02:04 PM

Thanks for your response! :o This will be a wall hanging so backing color will not matter and will be muslin as is the sashing and many block backgrounds.

cjsews 05-19-2017 02:11 PM

I was going to suggest same as madquilter. It would take some figuring to get it lined up but would look nice

Kassaundra 05-19-2017 02:42 PM

I would make a two color flange binding, the flange in the shadow color and the outer / back part the neutral (white off white background color.)

I vote for shadow color

racerh 05-19-2017 04:15 PM

I like the shadow color - nice. The blue grey color as suggested by Jennifer would be nice too!

Evie 05-19-2017 09:26 PM

Your Splendid Sampler will look great with whatever border you use. Good job!

dmh 05-20-2017 02:43 AM

I would normally say us the gray, but....
This time I TOTALLY vote for the MULTI-COLOR border using the colors in your quilt. I really think it would make your quilt pop, since you have neutral colors around your brighter colors.
Love your quilt! :)

Wanabee Quiltin 05-20-2017 06:10 AM

I vote shadow fabric.

carolynjo 05-20-2017 06:17 AM

I think a narrow (usual) would be fine on this quilt.

trolleystation 05-20-2017 07:43 AM

I vote for the shadow color. But, if you do not have enough of any color, DeltaMS has a good suggestion about piecing all the colors. I do that, especially, when I make a scrappy quilt. Good luck....be sure to post a picture.

I would vote for the darker gray but if you don't have enough I think you could possibly sew strips together with the lighter color and gray. Anxious to see what you decide. Lovely quilt.

quiltingbuddy 05-20-2017 08:22 AM

I love the shadow on half to mimic the blocks idea for the binding. I love the quilt also! Nice job!!!

annette1952 05-20-2017 01:15 PM

Awesome quilt Kitsie. I think the shadow fabric if you have enough but I also like MadQuilters idea. Please post when you finish.

KarenJ 05-21-2017 05:50 AM

How about fat binding with the off-white background fabric and a gray (shadow color) flange?

sewnclog 05-21-2017 07:09 AM

I'm for the darker gray.

Irishrose2 05-21-2017 07:41 AM

I would do a two color binding with the shadow color as the outside and the flange in red. Charisma's instructions make it so easy.

kittiebug 05-22-2017 12:02 AM

If you don't have enough of one use the gray and white you have. Do two sides gray and two sides white.

Wow, what a genius idea. I made a shadow mini quilt and wish I had thought of that idea. Since it is a mini, I may just have to redo the binding on it.

ArtsyOne 05-22-2017 03:01 AM

I'd do something really off-the-wall and do a black with white polka-dot or a black & white stripe :)
