Help with block name

1 Attachment(s)
I have instructions for making this block using squares and rectangles, and would like to know if there is a chart somewhere that has cutting sizes for different sized blocks. The one I saved makes a 3" block, and the maker called it an ultimate half square triangle block, but I think it has another name - my brain is not working today. Can someone enlighten me please as I can't find it on the web if I don't know the name. TIA

Birds in the Air, Cats Cradle I am sure there are more and I am sure others will chime in. Perhaps this can help

Quilters Cache is a site that gives block patterns with various size choices. Seems most blocks/quilt patterns have more than one name.

The traditional name I know is also Birds in the Air, the modern name I know is Shaded 4-patch. If you search on that there is at least one chart for purchase that has different dimensions, I didn't quickly find a free resource.

I pulled out my copy of the book, Designing Quilts, The Value of Value by Suzanne Tessier Hammond. The entire book is devoted to the block and different layouts -- but there was no sizing chart in there either! Still, is a great book if you happen to find it at the guild table or used book store:

Two other names for these blocks are Mary's Triangles and Shaded Four Patch. Google either of these and you will find tutorials to make them.

Also known as Grandmother's Choice. Per https://quiltsbyjen.ca/grandmothers-choice-quilt-block/ there is a difference between Grandmother's choice and the Bird in Air. There is a pdf at http://concordpiecemakers.org/wp-con...hersChoice.pdf for the fast way to not have to cut triangles to make the block. Which looks to be the same as the Mary's Triangles at https://hillsidequilter12.blogspot.c...-tutorial.html

According to https://www.quilterscache.com/G/Gran...oiceBlock.html it is only part of the block.

There are some more ways to put the shown block together at https://quiltsbyjen.ca/grandmothers-...ock-revisited/

Rhonda - a board member - had a tutorial on how she made mini blocks using her cut down method

https://www.quiltingboard.com/vbulle...al-t38879.html

She called them "Rhonda's Boston Blocks" - I think because of the connection to a book she had used.

There is a Creative Grids Cat's Cradle ruler. You make it oversized
and then trim with the ruler. Has a chart for different sizes.

OurWorkbench - You have found what I wanted with Mary's Triangles, she gives cutting measurements for a few different sized blocks. Thank you so much, and thanks to all who helped. When one has a name to go on lots of sites come up.
Checked a video for the Cats Cradle ruler, and that's another name for the block.

DebTucker has a video tutorial on YouTube for this and calls it a Shaded Four Patch. She uses her Tucker Trimmer and has a technique sheet for sale that has all the sizes to cut for different size blocks.

I have not seen a free reference sheet but there may be one on the web somewhere.

If you look at pictures of Birds in the Air and Cat's Cradle, those are not this block.
Shaded Four Patch matches:
https://tamarinis.typepad.com/tamari...tch-block.html
This site shows how to make it and, at near the bottom of the page, is a link to purchase a "Technique Sheet" for $7 that gives you cutting instructions for blocks in 21 sizes.

It really is amazing the different names for the same block. Then the differences in the quilts using the same block.

The Grandmothers Choice Pdf shows measurements for four different finished sizes from 4" to 8" It appears that Technique Sheet is for finished sizes from 2" to 12" by half inch increments. Just for fun I did a spreadsheet for the measurements.
For the 2" Finished =
Cream rectangle size – (cut 2) 1.5" x 2.5"
Colored square size – (cut 2) 1.5" x 1.5"
Colored rectangle size – (cut 1) 2.5" x 3.5"
And for the 12" finished =
Cream rectangle size – (cut 2) 6.5" x 7.5"
Colored square size – (cut 2) 6.5" x 6.5"
Colored rectangle size – (cut 1) 12.5" x 14"
