Need your advise. I'm putting a two inch inner border on a quilt for my little grandson but I discovered that the fabric is short by an inch or two for the longer sides. The only solution I can think of is to cut the fabric into two strips, sew them together and then place the border seam at the center of each quilt top side and sew it on. I wouldn't have to do that for the top and bottom. Is there another way to make the side bindings a bit longer or do you think it would be ok to do it this way?

It also gets a four inch outer border but I have plenty fabric for that border.

Could you put blocks/squares in the corners?

Do you have more fabric of the 2 inch border? If so piece all three long borders making sure you have enough to cover the 2" on each side--piece using a miter \ and then be sure to cut your borders to size measuring through the middle three times in your quilt.

If you are really close, then you could put a corner square of a matching or contrasting color in where the top meets the sides. I like that look.

Many people use mitered/diagonal seams for extending borders...I dont' even bother to center them because they don't show up very much, especially if it's a print fabric. Also, if you put the side borders on first they will require less fabric than if you put them on second...but you may already have planned them that way since that's probably a more "normal" sequence of attaching borders

Putting in a contrasting corner square is a good thought to consider.

I have done diagonal seams and straight seams to extend border strips. Generally speaking, I think the diagonal seams blend better and you don't notice the seam as much; however, with some fabrics I have found the straight seam looks much better (and sometimes, I simply don't have the extra to do the diagonal seam so I use the straight seam!).

I do each one on a case by case basis. Do whichever way you have enough fabric for and that you think looks better.

I think the cornerstones would be the perfect solution.
