I'm sure someone out there will know what I am talking about - its when you put two? fabrics together and stitch then cut between the lines and fray the raw edges - thats as much as I know - what is it actually called and is there a good tutorial that any one knows about as I have a project in mind that would look good using this effect but can't remember all the processes!!!!!

You have it right except you need to use more than 2 fabrics and you should sew and cut on the bias to get a fluffier effect.

At least 3 fabrics are needed. Lay one down FACE DOWN, next two FACE UP, stitch your lines on the diagonal (this works best), cut ONLY the TOP layer between the two layers that are FACE UP.

I usually just wash, but be prepared for a lot of lint in the washer/dryer if you are using flannel. I have not had real good results with cotton (not as much fraying).

If you want a heavier quilt use 4 layers of fabric. You can get a different look by cutting the top 2 layers between every other stitch line and 1 layer the opposite stitch line.

Just remember you have to have your design open on an edge to start your cutting (it's easier). I used my needle to the far left and used the edge of my pressure foot for the width guide.

I think you are talking about a "rag quilt." Raw edge is generally used for applique and chenille has more than two layers.

Below is a tutorial from this board. It is similar style to a couple of purses I made about 6 years ago. I used 5 fabrics (the secret for best results is to use loosely woven fabrics as the filler between two better quality fabrics). You can also use up those ugly prints someone gave you as filler because no one will see them. I even used some glitzy Indian sari fabric on one of mine. It was lots of fun. I'm sure you will really enjoy it!
