I want to make a bed size Christmas quilt for next year. I have collected a number of Christmas fabrics. Now here is my problem, while I have many blocks I could make most of them use three or more colors. I need one that uses only two colors. I want to use white and a Christmas fabric with many different Christmas fabrics blocks. What block would you recommend for a two color block? I am not a beginner but I do not like Y seams or hexagons. Thank you for your help.

What about a star block.

Scissor Queen 12-20-2009 10:46 AM

I made a two color quilt for my dil using a variable star pattern. It would work really well with a single fabric for the centers of the stars and you could use a variety of fabrics for the points and all whites for the back ground. Stars are always good for Christmas.

If your collection of Christmas fabrics has a relatively equal mix of lights and medium/darks, you might want to look at scrappy quilt patterns. "I Can't Believe It's a Beginner" from The Pattern Basket by Margot Languedoc makes up beautifully (and easily) and you could use twenty or more fabrics in it with great results, I'm sure.

I'm wondering just what kind of "work" you're asking them to do, Loretta, especially on a holiday....laughin' with tears in my eyes...

I had a lot of reds and someone said all reds work together. So I put it to the test. I made a bargello heart using only red fabric. It worked and turned out beautiful. All the reds blended quite well.
I also did Bonnie Hunters Pineapple Blossom using my Christmas fabric as scrappy. The only thing that was consistent was the white background. Again it worked well. So just go for it. Marge

You're looking at them in too big of pieces and you probably don't have enough of them yet. The rule for reds, greens and blues; 2 clash, 20 go together.

Thanks so much for sharing that rule, Scissor Queen. I've never heard it put so simply or so well... betcha I'll be quoting that one from now on.

Scissor Queen 12-20-2009 02:56 PM

LOL, thanks. Another way to make fabrics go together that don't, is to put something between them they both go with. Like if you have two greens that just won't play nice together find another fabric that uses tones of the two greens and all of a sudden they'll work together.

A 'Robbing Peter to Pay Paul' block would be striking. http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore12.html Just use whites for the white spots and various reds for the red spots and it should look amazing when you are done.

The pinwheel is a favorite of mine and looks fantastic using white with different fabrics.

I am making a Redwork Quilt with all Christmas Motifs. Embroidering the motifs in Redwork and setting together with some unusual fabric from my on-line store.
Redwork is all the thing, I learned at Guild last night.

I have just finished a Christmas quilt for DS & DBI. It is red & green with a cream background. I made most of it from my stash as I had collected a lot of red fabric & finally got to use it. I will post a photo of it tomorrow.

Neat quilting tip, I think you could work for the government and get these countries working seriously on the global warming problem. Great thought.

I have made two Christmas quilts using lots of different theme fabrics. Both quilts done in 9-patch used 27 different Christmas designs, set with red sashing. Those funny little slightly off colors play together when mixed with a bunch of others. I now have my Christmas stash built up again for another quilt. I found a bunch of the Christmas fabrics at yard sales this past summer. I have a goal to for 2010. Isn't it fun gathering for a project?

Lorretta - You don't want me to get any sewing done - all those blocks - my head is spinning.
Thanks to all for the great ideas. Now I have to narrow it down to one. That will be hard

guehlein 12-22-2009 07:45 PM

Making a disappearing nine patch is great with two colors and a variety of different fabrics for the larger blocks. I've made several - fruit and veggies were one, christmas fabric was another, sports fabrics were another, wild animals was another. It works up fast and nice looking.

Have ya seen Bonnie Hunter's "Carolina Christmas" mystery quilt? It's a beaut! She just grabbed reds and greens from her stash plus some gold and background fabric, I think for this Christmas quilt. Print off the pattern now or pay later when it appears in an upcoming book of hers. You'll need to scroll down a bit and follow directions for all the parts.
