Help with colors
4 Attachment(s)
Once again I am struggling with colors! I am picking fabrics for On Ringo Lake I am opting for scrappy for at least half of the fabrics. I chose Gold, Plum for the main colors, I am stuck on the accent color. I am leaning towards the brown, which is the original color in the pattern, but I am certainly open to suggestions! I am still undecided on the background but that is easier to resolve!

Definitely not the far right - too close in value to most of the purples and all the golds.
You might want to view using one of the red value preview things (the red plastic you look through) or convert the photos to B&W and see which looks most interesting. Value |
I love the peal gray with the purples that you have in the first picture on the left.

first one showing on far right or last one showing on far right also. both are lovely.
|
I like the pearl gray in the first one. I agree with others, the two on the right probably won't have enough contrast.

Here are your photos as if you’re looking through the red lens spoken of above.

Lisa, I like the second to left- black.
I bought that pattern too. Going to start it after the upcoming holidays. Too much going on right now for me. |

I liked the second one too, best. Is this the pattern from Bonnie at Quiltville? Wow! 😳 That is a lot of cutting (my least favorite) and seams!!!

I think this pattern works best with a light block color and a very dark color to define the block (the brown), so I'd go with the black for brown.
|
I really like the soft gray with the yellow and purple, but I've never made any of BH's quilts, so I googled it. I'm kinda confused... it looks like the quilt requires more than 3 colors?

Another vote for black.

Love that pattern..one of my favoritez

I would go for the pearl grey too. Compared with the others, it rides in as a neutral and adds the balance it needs. Beautiful! Simply beautiful.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I think I am going to rethink my color choices and try again, I am trying hard to work from my stash.

I vote for the third picture with the brown. The brown pulls from the tiny flecks of brown in the gold fabric . The darkest fabric works well too. You have to decide on how much contrast you like. A rug salesman told me the colors of the rug I chose were called Quiet colors. They don't jump out at you and say, See me. There is enough contrast to see the block design, yet the overall feel for the quilt is serene. Who knew colors could be quiet or loud? Good luck with your choices. Your fabric is lovely.

How about the black for the accent and the pearl gray for the background?

If you look at the On Ringo Lake quilt pattern (and my hats off to you for tackling that pattern!), it depends on a lot of value contrast to make the design pop. The purple and yellow are the colours you want to pop? Have a look at one of the quilt blocks, attached. You need to add in a very low value background, like a very pale grey, white or cream, and a luminous colour...maybe a coral to pop the purple and mustard. One way to choose colours that pop each other is to choose a balance across the colour wheel with your main colours. So the colours that are equidistant from yellow and purple on the colour wheel are red-orange and turquoise.

I like the dark in the second picture - I can't tell if it's navy or dark gray.
|
I like the brown the best.
