Help! Cotton fabric shiny from ironing
I am making 4 inch log cabin blocks with one side black and the other side various colors. I started out finger pressing as I went along building the blocks, but worried I was stretching the fabric. I got the bright idea to use my iron to press as I go (on the top side unfortunately). Last night I noticed the black fabric is shiny where I ironed and there are multiple layers underneath.
I starched the fabric before I used it. It's 100% cotton RJR brand. I used high (cotton) setting on my iron - it's a 1700 watt. Any ideas on how to get the shine off? Any thoughts on why it is shiny? |
It will be fine once you wash it. Starch + black= shine quite often.

This was a good question & glad to see the answer that the blocks are not ruined.

I agree you'll be fine once you've washed after you've finished your quilt. RJR is a high quality fabric and you should have no issues ironing it.

I'm feeling better. Thanks for the comments.

I am so happy to see your question as I recently had the same situation. Thought I had ruined my blocks. Now I know a quick wash upon completion will solve the problem.

Good to know...I would have panicked also.

If you want to prevent shine use a press cloth when you press the fabric. I always use a press cloth or iron on the wrong side when ironing dark colored garments to prevent the shine. The same would work in quilt pressing as well. I like the see through press cloths. They are similar to an organdy fabric. Mine are years old and I'm assuming you can still buy them. Another that I've used is a piece of muslin. You don't need anything heavy between the iron and the fabric, just a barrier will prevent the shine.
I agree with others that washing will take the shine away. |
