I've asked this question before and I went to the thread that was provided but the way they talk about is a bit complicated so do you know a more simple way to figure this out for the backing :?:  My top is 53"x53"
|
i believe you add 8 inches to account for 2 sides and 8 inches for top to bottom a total of 61 inches - 61 inches
feel free to correct me if i'm wrong |
If I wanted to do a simple back, it would be a framed fabric piece. For a 53"x53" I would start with a 44 1/2"x 44 1/2" fabric. I would sew a 4 3/4" strip of complimentary or same color fabric to each side then the same size to top and bottom. With the 1/4" seam allowance accounted for, my back would then measure 53"x 53".
53-44.5=8.5 8.5/2=4.25 4.25+.5=4.75 Is this helpful? :) |
If you need a visual; take your top to the fabric store. Lay the top onto the fabric you have chosen. Add 4-6 inches extra to the top and bottom. Have them cut two pieces at this length. Now, all you have to do is go home and sew the sides (after the selvedge is removed) together. Yes, you are going to have scraps (mighty fine scraps I will add). OR, you can buy fabric that is 108" wide and cut it at 60". You will still have scraps, but you won't have to make a seam. Hope this helps!

So 2 yards should do it fine? Would you cut the WOF in half or not? Gosh I feel so dumb asking these questions but oh well...

If you use 42" wide fabric, you would need a minimum of 3.5 yards. I would get 4 (but that's just me, can never have too many scraps!) |
