HELP!--Fabric Selection for Mariner's Compass
 

The following is the supply list for a paper piecing class on Mariner's Compass I'm taking.

Supplies:
•One fat quarter each of 3 darks
•One fat quarter each of 3 lights
•1/2 yard of light background
•One fat quarter framing fabric
•Add-A-Quarter ruler (8 inch)
•Size 14 Jeans needle
•Neutral 50 wt. thread
•Sewing Machine
•Rotary Cutter
•Ruler 8 x 12 or larger

I was thinking of using 3 turquoises for the darks and 3 oranges for the lights. Would this work? What color would you recommend for the framing fabric? I have white frost for the light background. Any opinions or recommendations?

If you look at images of the Mariner's Compass you need a light and a dark of the same color to get the image correct. The image is a solid object with a shadowed side to make it look bent. It can be anything you want. This is your project.

Here is one that I did. I used three different dark forest greens in the compass and the highlights were a blue and green batik. For the corner points, I used the three greens and added two others. An additional dark green was used as the border (my floor is dark so you really have to look hard to see the border). My background was a light celery colored batik with a faint design.

I had fun doing it When I got to the curves pieces (on mine they are the pieces between the on point center and the corner points ans well as the small curved pieces in the corners) - I cut them larger that what is called for - then trimmed them to size after completing the corners. That was the only tricky part for me and as I used the celery batik - I bought extra to gove me that flexibility
