hello all...i am new to quilting and am making a quilt that has 54 large blocks, each one should be a finished size of 7 inches. (each block is 2 flying geese , 1 on top of the other)
the border is exactly the same way only the finished size of each block should be 5 &3/8 inches. i have no instructions and and not the greatest at math and cant seem to figure out what sizes to cut my material (strips and rectangles) in order to make my flying geese blocks finished at these sizes!! any help would be appreciated????????????????????????????????? |
it is a strange size for a finished block.

Why is it so important that the blocks be "exactly" that size? When I make a block (unless it is for a swap), I make the block to the size that it works out to be. As long as all your geese are the same size, then the end-result may be a little larger or a little smaller.
People always ask me what size my quilt will be. My answer: I won't know until it's done. |

http://patchpieces.com/MiscPDFprojects.html - good method to make the flying geese.
the rule of thumb is: for quarter square triangles,(the "goose" part) add 1 1/4" to the finished size and for the half square triangles (the "sky" parts) add 7/8" to the finished size. |
