I want to make a crib quilt for a grand daughter due to arrive Jan 1. I

are you wanting to do the bugs with applique or embroidery or how are you wanting to get the bigs in the blocks? In MOST cases you can find either a clip art or a printable coloring book page online and use it as a pattern.

From the photo you can figure out approximately how big the squares need to be. Graph paper can be helpful for this; make each square equal to 1 inch. Once you have the square size figured out, add 1/2-inch to each width and length dimension for seams. Most quilters use 1/4-inch seams when piecing blocks. Similarly, you can work out the size of the border strips; again, add 1/2-inch to allow for seams.
