Help with a Grinch pattern
Good morning
First I would like to admit that I am a Grinch-a-holic....I am collecting all the kits, patterns, on sale fabric that I can put my hands on This morning I wanted to start on the free pattern posted on Robert kaufman,s website and it confused the heck out of me. Here is the link to the pattern so you can follow me http://www.robertkaufman.com/quiltin...s_panel_quilt/ First how to cut the panel the pattern lists the width and length of the blocks wrong because if I followed theirs half of the blocks will not show the pic in the block. For example if it says cut the block 8x10 the way the panel is you need to cut it 10x8 or else the faces will be chewed then the mistakes keeps going on and on with the strips that follows....help am I seeing this wrong? Has anybody done this pattern and give me hints? Thanks |
The different panels run WOF, right?
So turn the fabric. Now cut. |
I just quickly looked at the actual pattern (I had just looked at the fabric before).
I'm not taking the time to match up each panel but I think common sense would rule. For example - If I look at Panel4 on the quilt (How the Grinch Stole..w/red background), the cutting instructions are 10.5" x 7.5" The picture on the fabric page http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics...ADE-11224-223/ shows the width to be 7.5" Obviously, you would cut the 10.5" the long way. Then you're going to sew a 2" (cut) olive strip around the whole Grinch picture. You take the UNFINSHED block and do the postage edge thing (personally, I'd just use a wave rotary cutter). And the whole thing gets fused to the background piece that measures 12.5" x 15.5" All the blocks end up the same length (15.5 UNFINISHED), except the 3 thinner middle ones which have an UNFINISHED width of 9.5". while the 6 outer ones are UNFINISHED at 12.5". |
The free pattern Kaufman offered wasn't cost effective for me so I Googled grinch quilts and did my own thing like other quilters did. Here is the link https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...NZSuqAHWuICoBg

Anyhow thank you all for the help. I think I will just not follow the pattern by random cutting as I always do. |
I have made 2 of those quilts. There is several errors on the pattern on the Robert Kaufman site. Go to the designers website which is jaybirdsquilts.com I think. Or it is jaybirdquilts.com. look for the directions there. I did this and the instructions were correct.

Julie Herman is the designer and she has complete explanations about this pattern on her blog: http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2012/12...e-pattern.html

The part I really hated on the grinch quilt was cutting out the borders that are shaped like the edges of a postage stamp.

Thanks. I really love it and can't wait to finish it. Hopefully if all goes well tomorrow the top should be done as it is only a lap size. Will post pix when done
