Help!!! How can I safely remove oil?

Oh my!!! I am so upset. I oiled my machine yesterday and I guess I got too much. It leaked a drop about the size of a quarter onto my backing fabric!! Does anyone know how I can get it out without washing? It is already in the quilting process! Luckily it didn't get on the top. Help!!!

I've had good luck with the Shout Advanced in the spray can. It says it is for greasy stains.

If the Shout doesn't work: Blot as best you can with a paper towel or dry washcloth. Then cover both sides of the stain with a heavy layer of baby powder (cornstarch would probably work, too), place the area on a hard surface, and put a couple heavy books on it overnight. Brush off baby powder in the morning and see how it looks. Repeat if needed.

I use Dawn dish liquid for oil type spots. I figure if they used it to take oil off wildlife from oil spills than it should work on my much smaller "spills". Spot clean it with a few drops. It is very effective , so much so I keep a bottle near my washer.

I do the same thing! Shhhhhh...we don't want the makers of Dawn to get wind of it and then try to package it as a laundry aid and charge an enormous price!! I think it works better than Shout or Resolve and sometimes Oxyclean

I too use Dawn dish washing liquid. Nearly always works. Especially if I get to it quickly.

#1piecemaker, maybe you could treat and wash just that spot and not the whole piece of fabric.

I read yesterday that you can rub regular chalk on a grease stain . Supposedly the chalk absorbs the oil and you can brush it away. I would try it on a sample 1st tho...after the Dawn attempt!

I got grease on my double wedding ring quilt. After my crying fit, I came to the board for advice. I was told to use Dawn. I scrubbed it with a bit of Dawn and a damp rag. It came right out.

This board should be in charge of the world. They know how to fix everything.

Quiltngolfer 03-27-2013 06:48 AM

Dawn dish liquid always does the trick for me.

mom-6 03-27-2013 12:18 PM

If perchance the Dawn isn't sufficient you can try GermX or other waterless hand sanitizer/cleaner.

I also use Dawn dishsoap....the original formula, no bleach....but whatever method you choose, don't put any heat to the fabric until the oil stain is gone.....heat will set the stain

1 part Dawn and 2 parts peroxide in a spray bottle.

I should have known this!!! I love Dawn. Its the only thing I use for dishwashing! I even wash my truck with it. Great stuff! Thanks so much!! I am off to the kitchen.

Oh, Lisa, wouldn't that be the coolest thing!!!! Maybe we should have a march on Washington....think how many of us quilters there on in this country -- and the DHs who support us! Wow!

Then again, we might not be so good with a budget, since most of us have a pretty bad track record with our fabric and tools purchasing, hmmmm.

We may spend money but we keep the lights on, food on the table - even if DH has to cook it - and from what I read most of us save and pay cash or use gift cards. I think we could teach Washington a thing or two!

For a stubborn oil/grease stain use lighter fluid (naptha) then hand or machine wash. It won't harm your colors or weaken your fabric unless you light it - Don't do that!

sew4nin 03-28-2013 06:37 AM

ok #1piecemaker, did you get it out?

I have to show this to my DH! Ever since retirement he has been fiddling in the kitchen (and our quality of eating has gone way up!). With most of my retired friends it is the hubby that cooks! Probably not because the wives were not very imaginative (as in my case) but just because it is a new challenge. And just maybe they are proud of what their wives are doing and this is one more way to support them!

dawn dish liquid..

FubsyMog 03-28-2013 08:50 AM

I have had success with Fairy Liquid - don't know if this is a brand you can get in the States. As it is a degreasant to cut through grease on dirty dishes, it is good at removing any kind of oily stain. Any degreasing detergent should do the same I would think.

MamaDonna 03-28-2013 09:24 AM

Try using the CornStarch... when I was little (not that long ago!) I decided to put Crisco on my mom's brand new(just laid that day) carpet.. not a happy mom to say the least but she used Cornstarch, put a brown paperbag on it and weighted it down. Had to do it several times but she said it worked.. I also use Dawn on grease spots

sewellie 04-09-2013 07:55 PM

Is it a pattern that you could applique a flower or something like that? Or could you put a label over it? Just saying .......... Blessings, Ellie

starshine 04-09-2013 08:06 PM

If Dawn (I heard dawn original when I first heard about it) doesn't work you might try Lestoil.

Monroe 04-09-2013 08:51 PM

Glad the Dawn dish detergent worked. BTW- It's what rescuers use to clean oil soaked wildlife.
