I like your quilt. It's very pretty and I like the colors. Maybe you have just looked at it too long. That happens to me sometimes. Love the pattern also !

quilterpat 10-05-2012 01:36 PM

If you really don't like the white, as too white, why not tea dye it after you have finished quilting it?

I agree, exactly what I was going to say....a tea dye will calm all the colors and help them blend, all the more reason to use invisible thread....

Your quilt is beautiful. I'd use a star pattern if I were you.

I"ve got the fabric to do a Nancy's Fancy for my step GD. I've given her almost every FANCY NANCY book that's out and have Fancy Nancy and butterfly fabric for her quilt.

sewsew busy 10-05-2012 05:52 PM

I think it is very pretty and well done. As how to quilt it I don't know.

ctipton 10-05-2012 08:20 PM

Isn't it the pitts when you don't like something:mad: and everyone loves it:)??? But truly It is a Fab quilt. Maybe you are tired of looking at it. You will have a long list of addresses to send it to if you don't like it.. Good Luck..

PlanoDebbie 10-05-2012 08:23 PM

What? That quilt is beautiful! You can send it to me if you don't want it.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and suggestions. I've considered every one.
Here's what I have so far.
(And I hope I can sew straighter than I can Paint!)
Stars outlined 1/4" in with blue.
Intersecting star borders outlined in and out as one unit , 1/4 " in with invisible thread. (I tried the "quilt right through" suggestion on the upper right block, it's kind of neat, but a little confusing to look at.)
Triangle type shapes spanning blocks outlined in natural (or maybe the blue as well, as someone suggested).
I'll just have to turn the quilt a whole bunch of times, I couldn't work out an all over diagonal that follows the angles in the quilt, is fairly evenly spaced and stays within the quilt spacing required. (I ordered the Hobbs 80/20 online. The site said 4", but the package says 3.5". Maybe they're just overly cautious?) In the future I'll stick with a batt that allows larger spacing.
And for those of you who use invisible thread:
Is there any problem mixing this with regular thread in other parts of the quilt?
Is Sulky premium invisible a good one?
How do you start and stop lines of stitching? (I usually do 1/4" or less of microstitching and cut tails off at the fabric.) This stuff is pretty slick, I'm afraid it's going to come undone.
Also:
How do I keep the raw edges of the outer blue border from fraying while I do all these turns? The zigzag on my old Kenmore doesn't work, just forward and back.
Thank you all for your suggestions and comments, I really appreciate it.
And I don't hate the quilt, it's just very different from what I envisioned when I started the project.

KarenJ 10-05-2012 09:28 PM

And tea dye sounds interesting, but I wouldn't DARE!

francie yuhas 10-05-2012 09:29 PM

You could meander with red thru the red ribbons;meander with blue thru the blue ribbons;stitch the ditch outline of stars;maybe asmaller stipple in white areas? If you set it aside andlet it"ripen" a few days you will get your creative juices going..It's a great quilt

I tried to bury my invisible thread the first time I used it. That doesn't work. You have to start and stop with tiny stitches and cut the tails off flush with the quilt. I've only used YLI invisible thread with DMC embroidery thread for the bobbin. My machine loves that combination so I've never tried anything else. I've heard that other machines don't like the invisible thread.

Also:

I always use a large straight stitch (5) around the outside border as close to the edge as I can get to secure it.

Also, I wouldn't use my feed dogs with a walking foot if I had so many turns to make in such a small area. You can stitch straight lines with the feed dogs lowered and an embroidery foot. Practice on a sample or outside the edge of this quilt where you will be trimming off to see if you like doing that. It would save alot of time.

If I could only stitch straight lines, I'd crosshatch all but the stars. BTW that's a beautiful quilt.. It would do well in our returning military quilt project in our guild. We make a quilt for each area son/daughter returning from deployment out of the country, lap sized, with red/white/blue as main colors.

I think your quilt is just so pretty. Beautiful color choices and I don't even notice the white. I just noticed the beautiful blocks. I think you are too critical of your work. Maybe you need time away from it for a while. Like many others, I could send you my address if you are REALLY dissatisfied.......

fmhall2 10-06-2012 05:43 AM

If you really don't want to keep it, remember, it would make a wonderful Quilt of Valor for some returning wounded serviceman. However, I absolutely do love it. I think it is gorgeous.

Nancygeddes 10-06-2012 05:47 AM

How can U not love this quilt? It is beautiful.

Dizzymae 10-06-2012 07:01 AM

I find this happens to me as well. I work on some thing for so long ,by the time I have it all together I actually don't like it and can find so many things I could have done better.
I fold it up and leave it where I can't see it. One day when I come across it, I get a whole new feel for it.
I think my eyes just need to rest.

carla m 10-06-2012 08:26 AM

I just realized you are almost local... I live in Northfield. I will come over and take if off your hands if you really don't like it. I think it is beautiful!

matraina 10-06-2012 10:51 AM

I like the quilt. Think it's beautiful. Great job.

sharon1 10-06-2012 11:10 AM

I LOVE the quilt! Send it my way! HA!

QM 10-06-2012 11:31 AM

I love it as it is.
I use Thermore batting almost exclusively. It only needs quilting every 10". Seriously, even though it would mean lots of starts and stops, I would probably do stitch in the ditch in red on the red squares, blue on the 'ribbons', quilt a star in blue in the center of the stars and quilt a leaf or some such in the trapezoids and borders.

If you are considering doing this pattern again, since the white areas bother you, you could replace the trapezoids with a paler version of the star fabric color. Maybe do deep green stars, pale green trapezoids, burnt orange squares and gold ribbons, for a nice Fall effect.

nygal 10-06-2012 11:48 AM

If you are still unhappy with your quilt...I'll take it. lol It is beautiful!!!!!

QandE2010 10-06-2012 03:44 PM

I agree with the responders. It is gorgeous. Be sure to post the completed project.

Happy Tails 10-06-2012 06:10 PM

No offence, but I think you're crazy...your quilt is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Repeat after me......I will send this quilt to my quilt friend Wendy cuz I hate it and she loves it....CAPICHE????? :)

psychonurse 10-06-2012 06:21 PM

I really like it. I don't think its too white.

maryellen2u 10-06-2012 06:40 PM

I know nothing about the quilting part of your question. I always send mine to a LAQ. However, I do really love your quilt! I love the pattern, the piecing, the colors, the whole nine yards! Good job and keep going to completion!

masufa 10-06-2012 06:56 PM

it's beautiful I really like it

red-warrior 10-06-2012 06:58 PM

I can't help with the quilting but I think it is lovely!

trolleystation 10-06-2012 06:58 PM

Too bad that you have already begun quilting it, I was going to suggest that if your would like to take some of the sharpness away from the colors, you could tea dy it to make it more civil war looking. That being said, I have to say that I really like it. If you are a straight line quilter, how about diagonal quilting at 3.5 intervals across the quilt maybe using a red variegated thread. I hope that you learn to like your quilt as you work on it.

linmid 10-06-2012 07:22 PM

I don't think you quilt is to bright at all, it is lovely. Sorry I have no suggestions on how to quilt. My hardest part of quilting.

spokanequilter 10-06-2012 07:34 PM

I will gladly adopt this quilt if you still are unhappy with it.... Also, I love the suggestion that it be a Quilt of Valor for a soldier, but check their website for size requirements.... It's beautiful!!!

Taughtby Grandma 10-09-2012 05:46 PM

I love it, I would use verigated blue thread to quilt it. If you want the stars to stand out I would outline them. Feathers might be pretty in the border.

QuiltingCrazie 10-09-2012 09:39 PM

I would love the pattern or name of it. I would do 1/4" in side all the star pieces and echo the outer of the star. The labyrinth I would just trace right through the middle of the piecing if my choices were straight lines.

KarenJ 10-09-2012 09:46 PM

It's "Nancy's Fancy" by Nancy Martin. You can find it with a google search.
I've pretty much decided to just outline everything with 1/4", all stars, star borders and the triangle type shapes that span the blocks. Lots of turns......................oh well.
