Help with hst sizeing
 

What would the square be for a finished 12& 1/2 in unfinished block?
Possibly dimensions to do the 8 at a time from 1 block?
My math isn,t very good these days.

I'm not understanding your question. Do you want one HST that measures 12 1/2" unfinished? My math for HST is I always make the square 1" bigger than the finished size and trim down once sewn. So I would need the size of HST unit you are trying to get.

add 7/8" for precision cutting -
12 1/2 + 7/8 = 13 3/8"

easier - add 1" to unfinished size
12 1/2 + 1 = 13 1/2
then cut down to precise 12 1/2" blocks -
you will really only lose a sliver.

for grid cutting - the formula is
unfinished size X 2 + 1
12 1/2 X 2 + 1 = 26" squares - --> eight 12 1/2" HSTs
this formula will yield slightly larger blocks that you
will have to trim.

You can get 9 HST from a 12" square and they will be 3"HST finsihed. Is that what you are asking??

sorry i am a dimwit today.
that should read - add 7/8 to finished size - or 1" to finished size (for cutdown method)
so -
12 1/2 unfinished - translates to 12" finished
12 7/8 for precision cutting and sewing -- or
13 for cutdown.

Here's my "go to" method for 8 HST's: (if you want a 3" finished HST, (2 X 3") = 6" + 1 3/4" = 7 3/4" is the size to cut the fabric squares.) Hope this helps.

I love the Magic 8 method for HST if you are needing lots of HST's from the same two fabrics.

Before you cut up all of your good quilt fabric and start making them, be sure that you make one practice set of blocks. Trust me, it will save you the sanity of cutting out a ton of new blocks only to find out that you didn't stitch close enough to the drawn lines and now you have a ton of blocks that measure 2-1/4" instead of the 2-1/2" needed for your project and no extra fabric. While it does take extra time, add an additional 1/2" to the size of your initial two squares and square up each block after cut and pressed. You will be happy you did.
