Help! I need some ideas for...........
A friend and I will be hosting a quilters retreat this fall and need an idea for a hand-made gift for each retreater. Last year we gave the little chicken pin cushions. Does anyone have an idea for something quick and easy to make? Ideas/pattern?

I do the same thing every year and I agree it is a challenge to find something easy to make and yet cute. Last year I made thread catchers. I had to greatly inlarge the design one of the qulters shared with us on this forum. They turned out cute and very easy to make. You might be able to search this web site for thread catchers.

I made several of those snappy bags and gave as gifts at Christmas and everyone seemed to like them.

A couple of us made little zippered bags - very simple any shape/size you want. We gave them to our golfer friends for their golf tees, etc. or golf gambling change!! They are a great way to use up scraps. We bought small zippers thru zippers.com for like 17 cents each.

The best gift I got at my last retreat, wasn't home made--it was a 12 inch long piece of non slip shelf liner, to put under my sewing machine pedal. No more chasing the pedal around under the table.

How about a basket to hold all their supplies while sewing. I took one to my retreat and it came in real handy.

OMG! Great Idea, I am so going to do this today! I hate chasing that darn pedal. Thanks!!

How about a block keeper? I have a 14 inch square of felt like material that a 14 inch square of thicker gauge tablecloth plastic is sewn onto. The plastic is layed on top of the pinked felt square and a 1/4 inch seam is sewn on one side. A ribbon is sewn on the felt on the opposite side, in the middle. You put your unsewn block pieces in it to travel with. I've used mine a lot for going to classes for both sewn and unsewn blocks. You roll it up and tie the ribbon in a bow.
I have also used it for a quick quilting design trial template. I put my finished block under the plastic and use a dry erase marker to try out quilt designs. If you used different coloured felt and rolled them up, they would look cute in a container in the middle of the table. |
Pin cushion in the shape and colour of a pumpkin (it was an Autumn retreat), a large thread catcher with the top pin cushion, a chance to win free LAQ from one of the members who donated it, homemade Martha Steward cookies and I can't remember all the others.
Smaller retreats that I sponsored: 2 1/2"x6 1/2" rulers, binding winders, plastic coated card of Jelly Roll instruction. I really only know how to make quilts, no luck sewing anything else. I have wholesale accounts, so less expensive than buying retail. |
Here is a cute pattern for a box/basket to hold supplies.

What about thread catchers? Plenty of patterns on TipNut.

1. A tabletop trash basket/scrap-thread holder for use at workshops
2. A flannel/other soft fabric case for slipping one's rotary cutter into (like glasses cases) 3. A long, thin "tube" with elastic at the bottom for holding those plastic grocery store bags 4. A smallish quilted square backed with that grippy shelf-liner to place beside your sewing machine to hold a pair of scissors, an awl, seam ripper, etc. right beside your work space. (Couldn't sew without mine!) Jan in VA |
How about new potholder ... everyone has one they should have tossed a long time ago.
