I do this too. I also found that, when you can, if you have the seam allowance on the top facing away from you (towards the needle on your machine) the pressure foot helps the seams butt up together as they feed through. If you have it the other way, the seam allowance facing toward you, then the join pulls apart. I saw this tip on a Simply Quilts show years ago and it really seems to help.

Always pin perpendicular to the stitching line. I learned that in Home Ec. and later in industrial sewing.
