I don't know if your grandfather was a coffee drinker, I like the idea of mug rugs, bears or ornaments.

At 98 Grandpa no doubt lived through the tough times of the 30's, and I bet he appreciated utilitarian things. How about making fabric shopping bags or lunch bags or totes -- useful and good for the environment, and much less time consuming than lap quilts for a large number of people.

I would consider making pillow cases out of them. That way, every one gets a way, to give him a hug goodnight every night. I'm just a sentimental softy about such things. :) :) :) :)

My avatar is made from my from my 96yr old uncle's jeans. He died about 4yrs ago, so I took his jeans and made this for my Aunt (his wife) who is now 88yrs old. She makes beautiful handmade quilts but was so surprised when I made this for her. I embroidered their names as well as the names of all her children, grands and great grands. She loves it.

On one of my grandson's quilts (age 3)for his bed, I made the corner blocks from shirts from his 4 grandfathers (3 were grandfathers and one was a great-grandfather) These represented the 4 "cornerstones" of his life.

You really need to think about his personality and things he liked to do before really deciding what kind of project to make. There are just so many options. I would say on limited time, table runners are a good way to go - or candle mats or something like that... small and uses up smaller amounts of materials.. but if you could tell us some of his hobbies and whatnot, I'm sure that someone will be able to come up with a great block idea :)
