I agree with the others-Apple Core pattern is what you have. I have purchased a plastic template from MSQC and hope to make a quilt with this pattern some day. Although I bet the maker of your quilt did not have templates. I bet they cut out each piece with scissors and patiently sewed them all together.

I made a tote bag from red and blue apple cores and will not do another. It drove me crazy.

I do the same Dakota Rose. If a pattern really drives me crazy I quickly find a smaller something to make just to get it done. The items always come in handy for some gift.

As you have just found out, quilt patterns often have multiple names depending on time period and geographic location of the quilter, Apple Core is the most common name particularly now and Axe Head is from pioneer days. I believe there are actually a few more names for this pattern but i don't recollect them this morning.
