Wife is in making a "ragquilt?" and has made several with her machine from highschool. It sqeaks and is loud. Want to get her a new one for Christmas. I have done no research and dont know where to start, but would like one to last for another twenty years. She enjoys making quilts. any info would be helpful. Thanks

Shaggy, what a wonderful gift! I am sure your wife would appreciate a new machine. At the top of this page, you will see a search icon. Click there and enter something like buying a sewing machine. This topic was covered previously, so you may want to start there. Good luck and let us know your specific questions, when you have researched a little.

Shaggy, here is one link to a discussion we've had about sewing machines. There may be others that you find on your search, but you could start here...

I think it's great that you want to get her a new machine for Christmas. She's going to love that!! In the meantime, has her current machine been serviced lately, or have you done any maintenance on it yourself? Sometimes just a good cleaning/oiling can make a huge difference. Especially in the bobbin area. That seems to be the one place that my machines have needed some cleaning and a little squirt the most often.

Her quilt is just beautiful! :)

Is there a sewing dealer in your area that you can visit and see the machines have them demonstrated, they would be your most informed source.

My suggestion for a new machine is giving her a gift certificate for a machine of her choice. I used to sell machines and nine times out of ten the women want to pick their own out. there are so many different ones out there with many different features and everyone has there own idea what they want in a machine. I wholeheartedly agree with the gift certificate.....a BIG ONE so she can have the machine of her dreams.

On the other hand, talk about her love of sewing and casually ask her about the "machine of her dreams." what would she really love to have if she could have a new one. I bet you will get some good responses, enough to fuel your energy toward buying her the one big gift she really wants.

On the practical side, I would NOT want my husband to give me a machine of his choice. He has no idea what I would want or use. Surprises are nice, but sometimes they go awry.

Better safe than sorry!

Yes...gift certificate!! My husband purchased my last machine for me and altho I use it , there are many things I have to use my older machines for that this one won't or can't accomplish....I cannot machine quilt with it... it is great for piecing and it has some fancy stitches on it that I use on occasion but for quilting and binding I have to use my older machine.

Make sure its enuf so she can get all the bells and whistles she needs and extra accessories!

Good luck!!
