Help with incomplete double wedding ring top
 

I just inherited my grandmother's DWR top. The squares/diamonds are missing and I don't know how to start to fix it. Do I piece the small 4 squares together then fit into the space or connect them to the arch first then piece together. Will be doing all by hand.

I know it's going to be hard either way. Just hoping someone had run into the same problem before.

I am doing mine in sections . The whole quilt is 9 circles by 9. I split. It into 3 by 3 sections. These I made top, then sandwiched and quilted. You have to leave about 1/2inch all around for joining and watch how the connecting 3by3 is patterned. The middle section§ 3x3 I made into a circle of feathers with the Couples initials in the middle. I found these smaller sections easier to handle and gave more satisfaction as each was finished. When 3 are finished join together and one third finished. Hope you can follow . Will look for some photoessays not sure I took any.

Sorry miss read message. Look on utube a very good tute the square as if the are a solid red go at the end of the arches but usually the are mor elongated shape.

I can't offer a bit of advice on how to proceed, but I wanted to say your grandmother did some nice work and I'm so glad you're going to finish it up for her!

No help in finishing but it is beautiful & I'm glad you have it and good luck with getting it finished!

I think Tartan gave you good advice. DWR's are not usually constructed in that manner---not sure why your Gram did it that way. They are usually constructed so the seams are sort of "S" curves, which is probably easier. It's nice you are able to finish it. It's beautiful and a real treasure, especially since it connects you and your Gram on the same project. Have fun!

Thanks to all. I also think it is beautiful and can't wait to sleep under it. After a good night sleep, I think I have a plan. I am going to create a 6" square template and mark the back of the top and fudge around the melons so I won't struggle as much trying to get it to line up. I know that some of the arches have already warped and I want the squares to look right since they will be more noticeable. Once I quilt it the misalignment shouldn't show up as much. Tartan the applique idea is good but I would like to stay as true to my GM's work as possible. I'll keep you all posted but will welcome as many ideas as you can give.
