Does anyone know of an online fabric source for dupioni or shantung silk? I've wanted to make a quilt from silk for awhile and want to start collecting the fabrics. Any help would be appreciated...Also I would love any advice on sewing with silks, never done it before.

fabric.com sells dupioni silk.

I have pieced together silk scraps and so far it is the size of a table runner...don't know if I will make it bigger..do want to make a bed size quilt for myself...started as an experiment to see how silk would sew..as I have lots of scraps from making sild drapery....
one thing to note is to handle as little as possible as the silk frays easily...you could make seams a little more that 1/4 inch...

It used to be most places were selling it for $16/yard (or $4/FQ), mostly at shows.

When I was last in MaryJo's in June 08, I was thrilled to see a table of a gazillion colors ...and a price of $10/yard.

I bought a lot of my dupioni stash from G Street Fabrics. I see their prices are now up to $22/yard. I don't remember how much I paid but I KNOW I didn't pay that much.

If anyone knows a lower price than the $14.98/yard, please chime in. ;-)


I prewashed my silks (mind you, I NEVER prewash my cottons). I zigzagged around the edges and just tossed it in the machine. I don't think I used the dryer.

In some instances, I've used a fusible interfacing to cut down on the fraying - it is very, very annoying. I found it was easier to work with and reduced all the wispy silk fibers floating around.

Hancock Fabrics has quite an array of colors of both in the "bff" collection. I know there are quite a few stores in TX.

I found some in Austin at a shop on Lamar St. Don't remember the name of it, but will try to find a card if I kept one. It wasn't a quilt shop, just a small fabric shop with some unusual fabrics.

fabric.com has a few in the $12-13 range, and some "faux silk" at $9, but most of them are more.

Here is aother source for your silk. I have purchased fabric from them and service was fine, but it has been a few years. I see that the dupioni is from $10-$18, and you can buy a full bolt if you have that much money!

A good friend of mine does a lot of heirloom sewing and says that the best silk dupioni she has found is at Martha Pullen's site.
