Help locating pp'd block

Good morning all,
I'm wanting to make the following quilt.

http://www.quiltwoman.com/Prism-Star...t-Pattern.aspx

I have the pattern. It calls for using templates for the star blocks. I'd much prefer to paper piece this block as I'm planning to do a king-sized quilt.

I've drawn out the block in my EQ5 as a 6" block and set it for foundation piecing. It's printing out an exploded version vs a single block.

I have searched Mr. Google until my fingers are ready to fall off trying to locate this particular block in a paper pieced version, to no avail.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a pp'd version of this block or explain to me how to get my EQ5 how to print it as a single block as opposed to an exploded version with each unit separated??

I don't even care what the block size really is - somewhere between 6" and 12" finished is peachy.

TIA for your help.

I'm not a pp expert..only do it if nothing else will work. But looking at the pic of pattern it appears this star has to be done in sections-pp or pieced, hard to tell. Or is it appliquéd to background?

Oh how I like that pattern!
You will get some great 3-D effects that will twinkle and glow with the right fabrics.

You can create this PP pattern, easy enough yourself (and skip the computer!).
Start with the templates that came with the pattern, and draw them on paper to make your star.
Then add in lines through the white space from the inside corners of each of the points of the star to the outer edge of each block.
Remember to mark the outer edge of the block.
This pattern has the stars floating, and so, the points will not be at the outside edge, but in a bit.
Great ... as it avoids using sashing to separate the stars!

At this point, I colour or mark each section as to what colours I am using.
Dark, Light and White if I am using assorted fabrics/colours ... or the actual colour.
For me, this minimizes how much I have to think when I am PPing and makes it almost goof proof (for me!) to get the wrong colour in the wrong place!

Photocopy and separate each section.
For this pattern you will have eight sections, with four pieces in each.
Add in the seam lines allowances .

Then you are ready to photocopy and make your blocks.
First, I would just do one set to test the pattern, and make sure you have everything correct.
Once you have tested it .... photocopy to your s desire! :)

Yes, there are patterns for this block around ... right now, I am not sure where though!

It looks like a variation of Carol Doak's "Nebraska Star".

I have EQ7, so I can't say for sure that this will work with EQ5. When you print the block in EQ7, there is an option for foundation pattern. This prints what you need for paper piecing.

In EQ5 you can't move the block templates on the page. That may make a difference. But usually selecting Foundation print for one block only not the whole quilt will give you the numbered templates in the order and sections you need. You may have the print setting to be print the quilt not the block.

I looked at the link and honestly, I think what you're asking for is impossible. It's printing an exploded version because you need to first paper piece it in sections, then assemble the sections together into the block.

I have nothing to offer, just looking at the comments.

I have EQ5 and, yes, you can move template pieces

I meant rotate the pieces on the page to make room for more pieces.

I have EQ7. I took one of the 8 point stars in the block library and added the additional splits to all the star points. Then I chose Print, Foundation Pattern, Options - 6 inch block and moved the pieces just slightly so that all fit on the same page. Hope this helps you out. I would measure your printout, if you try to use these pieces, and make sure you get 3 inches wide on the pieces.

Neither of these blocks are made with a Y seam for the side. If you want either of the patterns with the Y let me know and I'll make the changes.

Thanks to Barb in Louisiana for all that work. I have EQ7 but am just not up to speed on it yet. And I see you got it done at 12:40 A. M.

Once again, thank you all! The knowledge base here is just amazing. Barb, thank you so very much for doing those PDF's! I'm able to print those out!

And QuiltE - thanks also for the drafting instructions. Might have to play around with that when I'm a bit more awake!

I did also manage how to figure out how to get the block printed as a single block in EQ5 (on the print menu; on options tab; de-select 'separate units).

Somehow I think among all of these solutions I can move forward with this project. I'll do some test blocks to see which is best for me and then go shopping! Lancaster, here I come!

Thanks again to everyone!

Thanks NJQuilter! ... the PP EQ patterns that BarbInLouisiana created are the same as how I was trying to explain for doing it on paper. You don't need this now, but another time ... with the EQ5 full block view you created, you could cut each section apart, add on the seam allowances, and avoid needing to work with the templates from your original pattern.

BarbInLouisiana ... Great work!

Awwww....you gals are so nice. I love playing in EQ7. Eventually I may really know what I am doing. "smile"

Gosh, now I wish I knew how to paper piece! You ladies are amazing!

Jingle 11-18-2016 02:14 PM

Nothing to contribute, I think it is a beautiful pattern.

This block is included in Jennifer Chiaverini's Sylvia's Bridal Sampler, called "Silver and Gold". You'll find it in EQ under that name with a few extra seams on the corners, with Y seams. Having pieced it myself, I can tell you it's not ideal for paper piecing because of the sixteen points meeting in the center. Even without the paper it's quite a chore to put together. I recommend lots of patience and deep breathing! Here's my finished block:

FPP a 16 point star? In 6 inch blocks for a king sized bed?????? Good luck!!!!!

Kassaundra 11-18-2016 04:23 PM

Have you thought about using a striped fabric? If you found a 2 color stripe in the colors you want to use w/ a wide enough stripe to fit each point and fussy cut the spot in the stripe, you could get the look of the 16 point star w/ only 8.

NJ Quilter 11-18-2016 06:48 PM

LyndaOh - I'll have to check that out in my version of EQ. I just did a quick look see the other day. Thanks for that heads up.

Kassundra - not particularly committed to 6" blocks but those don't scare me even for a king - been there done that! Probably 8" is better to get the 'twinkle' effect that I like with this particular block/quilt. Since I'm way past my self-imposed deadline on this quilt, I'm still just in the beginning stages.

Generally, I'm not afraid of/opposed to Y seams. Have done those on a few lemoyne (sp) star quilts/variations. I'm thinking if I can break it down into a 4 section pp'd block I should be okay. I can do the center sections by pressing my seams open which I normally do but is not typical with pp'ing and that will help the blocks lay flatter. I think.

Just want to get the block piecing squared away at this point so I can go fabric shopping. Probably won't even get the piecing part down for a couple of weeks yet. Lots of real life as well as quilting life ahead of this particular project!
