Help - looking for a quilting tool...
I don't have a clue what it is called so don't know how to find it on line. I ripped out a seam at a quilting guild meeting and a gal handed me a tool to clean up the loose threads. It almost looked like a pencil with sort of a big eraser on the end. It worked great (much to my surprise) so I thought I'd pick one up at JoAnns....wrong. They didn't have them and had no clue what I was talking about.
Of course I knew all I had to do was ask on the Quilting Board and I'd get an answer licketey split - LOL...the GENIUS Board. Thanks for any help you can give me. Pat |
I just googled "seam rip thread remover" and several things popped up. Here's one on Amazon:

I have one of those too - they're great!
|
I received mine from my Secret Santa ---- it is THE BEST !!!!
|
It is called Seam Fix Ripper. Available on eBay and Amazon.
|
Glad to hear that people like this tool. May have to get one for myself!
|
Thank you IQ....... I swear I wrote a response earlier but I have no idea what happened to it.....it's not here. Oh well, I'm so happy to find where I can get one and doubly happy because everyone is commenting about how much they like theirs.
Yes it would make a great gift for a quilting buddy. Thank you all for the help and responses. Pat |
Another tip - you can also use an emery board to pick up stray threads. :)
|
Walmart here has the Seam Fix. Also Fons and Porter's big red and cream seam ripper handle will do the same thing but you have to put the ripper end cap on first or ouch. The end of the Seam Fix is latex. A big latex white eraser will work but then you have to keep up with two tools instead of one.
|
They sell them at my Walmart. It has a big "eraser" like top. It does a great job removing threads. If you can't find one, I wonder if any kind of eraser would do the same thing?
|
Interesting, never thought of using an eraser. I usually am careful to clip on the side of the seam that the fabric is going to be discarded so that goes in to the "Save the scraps for dog bed" sack.

I love the "eraser" head on this tool but I have to admit it's not my favorite seam ripper. I like either very small, fine seam ripper points, or my real favorite is the scalpel style. But when I go to a class, I usually only bother to bring this one. It's not my favorite but it works well enough. At home I pretty much only use the eraser part of it (but I do use that part enough that I don't feel it was a wasted purchase.) |

I have to agree it is a fantastic tool! I was a hard to be sold, as I loved, loved my other seam ripper, until I tried it. I knew needed to have it. I bought it came home gave it to DH said "here this can be a present." He is always looking for something special. We started the list thing when the kids were younger. We make a Wish List, all year of inexpensive little things, for grandkids can get us now.

That has happened to me also. I figured I had forgotten to click on "Post Quick Reply". |
They are on MSQC. I just seen them.

I have one and love it. It's called seam-fix. You can see how it works on this YouTube video:

I only have the mini size and although I seldom use it I do like
it (when I can find it). YES WalMart is now carrying them and they are also carrying the Clover Wonder Clips in both the 10pk and 50pk as well as the large green clips. |
The thing I don't like about this tool is: you can't put the cover on the back end of the ripper so you have both things in your hand at the same time. It won't fit on the end of the Seam Fix ripper because it's a safety issue. I don't use the ripper part of the Seam Fix. It's not sharp or thin enough for me. I just buy it for the eraser end. Cheap at Walmart. |
I wouldn't spend the extra $ on a tool like that. As others have mentioned, there are different ways. My preferred "tool" is a piece of painter's tape wrapped around a finger. Works great, and is cheap!
|
I use a pencil eraser, much cheaper.
|
My BFF gave me one of those and I just thought it was a seam ripper with a knobby head. Thanks for letting me know about the other valuable tool on there.

They sell two different sizes our WalMart
|
I use a mini lint roller or a piece of masking tape. Had not heard of this one. Thanks.
