Help me decide what to do with this fabric?

1 Attachment(s)
Hi all! I discovered Laurel Burch when my swap partner listed it as her favorite fabric and found this great seahorse fabric. My mom LOVES seahorses so I got a bunch of the seahorse fabric and coordinates from LB. I have a bit more than 1/2 yard of each fabric and I am trying to figure out what pattern to use. Does anyone have ideas of what type of quilt construction would really showcase the colors and patterns on this fabric?! Thanks!

Really pretty fabrics. Here's one quilt pattern that I like to use now and again: Bailey's Quilt.

Love the fabric. I have some of the curvy line ones in my stash.

Hikeaddict 03-13-2015 05:50 AM

JenniePenny- I like that pattern! I might have to play with that and see!
ontheriver- isn't it lovely?! I love the metallic, but not sparkly aspect to it. Now what to do with it... :)

ManiacQuilter2 03-13-2015 06:21 AM

I would look at Google photos to see what other quilters have done with Laura's fabric:

https://www.google.com/search?q=Laur...w=1010&bih=614

My first thought was a D9P but you would need something calmer for the part that becomes the sashing.

All those wavy lines make me think of water in the ocean. Do you, by any chance, do applique? It would make a great wall hanging with fishes, and other under water things.

bee3 03-13-2015 06:28 AM

such nice fabrics, try googling "wavy ocean quilts" and click images, some really cute quilt ideas come up. Maybe a
drunkards path ? or something to showcase the wavy ocean fabric ?

bee3 03-13-2015 06:35 AM

sorry, I didn't mean drunkards path, Im thinking of a quilt block that looks like a big wave, maybe its called monkeys tail ?

Is this pattern posted in the virtual thread similar? http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...ml#post7125870

Yes, it has similarities, but there are more sizes of rectangles in Bailey's quilt. Here is one I made a few years ago.

nativetexan 03-13-2015 07:25 AM

someone recently posted a wave quilt done with drunkard's path blocks. looked great. colors gradating toward one corner. here it is http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...e-t262311.html

Gorgeous fabric and I wish I could help you! Unfortunately I'm having the same problem with her "horse" fabric! I will check back to see what ideas you may get.

faykilgore 03-13-2015 10:24 AM

Those are absolutely gorgeous fabrics, Check out the long running scrappy quiit show thread under pictures. Lots of awesome ideas!

I also love Laurel Burch fabrics. Gorgeous prints, very nice fabric! It's so easy to iron because it barely wrinkles!

You should keep a large enough block in mind so you don't cut up all the pretty seahorses!

I made a quilt with different sealife prints (Hoffman I think) and I love how it came out. I used a large square for the focal fabrics, and 9-patch blocks for the other fabrics, a simple sashing and coordinating outer border. Here's a pic of mine.

What about tumbling squares from Missouri Quilting. There is a tutorial on the website.

twinkie 03-14-2015 02:30 AM

Beautiful fabric. Two patterns I like to showcase fabric are the Snowball/9 patch and the puzzle quilt. Good luck with this quilt.

jmoore 03-14-2015 03:33 AM

what about Snapshots or Between Friends out of the book Happy Hour by Atkinson Designs? www.atkinssondesigns.com

Judylee2 03-14-2015 04:11 AM

Snowballs and nine patches! Missouri Star has the pattern and a tutorial.

Judylee2 03-14-2015 04:12 AM

Sorry, I should have read a couple more lines, Twinkie. Great minds think alike!

tessagin 03-14-2015 04:35 AM

I was thinking same thing. Love that pattern and all the fabrics can be incorporated easily. I'm betting it would give an illusion that it's moving.

I used the M*QC Slice of Life pattern when I wanted to showcase my fabric. Very easy and I loved the finished quilt. Pattern is in Block magazine, issue 4, late summer.

In the middle, the blues, the one with the metallic is in this quilt. Simple but I love it, it was made for someone very special.

I would do something that shows the beautiful fabrics in their color entirety, like this pattern:

or this:

ShirlinAZ 03-14-2015 07:51 AM

Bring back an oldie (sort of). A turning 20 would be fabulous in these fabrics.

jzaaboo 03-14-2015 08:14 AM

This one would be cute, too: http://www.feedsacklady.com/pattern-somethingfishy.php

MargeD 03-14-2015 09:03 AM

I love Laurel Burch fabrics too; but I am afraid I don't have the perfect block/pattern for you. Whatever you do it will be an awesome quilt with those great fabrics.

JanieH 03-14-2015 10:26 AM

No idea but your fabric is wonderful.

wildyard 03-14-2015 11:21 AM

I am kind of seeing a modified trip around the world; maybe with the blocks a little bigger so the seahorse fabric is big enough to show well. Or perhaps using all the other fabrics and using the seahorses as multiple borders.

This is delicious fabric and I wish I had the problem of owning it and figuring out how to use it!!!

oklahomamom2 03-14-2015 12:37 PM

Maybe do an irish chain block http://www.generations-quilt-pattern...ish-chain.html
Here is a pattern that a women here made that posted on the board http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...lt-t83667.html

How about seahorse squares, with wavy frames, and curlycue sashing? Might look sort of like a fish tank wall at the store?

Grandma Mary 03-14-2015 02:35 PM

Take a look at this pattern. THE RIBBON BOX QUILT, is a free pattern and it is really good at showing off the fabrics. I had a lot of fun making one from this pattern for my grand daughter. I will be posting pictures of it as soon as I finish the binding.

Daisy Dew 03-15-2015 01:33 AM

Such lovely fabrics you have - look at a "Turning Twenty" or "Fat Quarter Shuffle"

Sew Freak 03-16-2015 08:31 AM

luv the material!!

IBQUILTIN 03-18-2015 09:55 AM

When I looked at all your pretty fabrics I saw a log cabin quilt. Don't know why, but I think that would be a great choice
