Help me get started
 

I'm making a quilt for my 9 year old GS and I'm stuck. It will be similar to the one I made for his cousin (picture attached) but there are six larger blocks (20") that the smaller bits will be filling in around. I've had him put some smaller squares with each large block but ... it's given me a start but I'm still struggling. I'd like to keep the big blocks on top of the bed (double) so just concentrating on a space 60" x 72" for now. Second picture is what I'm working with.
Grandson really liked working with the quilt squares!

I wish I had the vision to help you but I don't. I like what you did on the first quilt. Matching the background is a good start. Friendship stars or Flying Geese might be good fillers. There are quite a few spaceship patterns. I searched for Spaceship Quilt Pattern in BING and found lots of good ideas.
Another idea might be to make these blocks the center of log cabin blocks with Fg as the sashing.

SuzzQ ... I really like the colours you are working with and the borders you've already added. Those colours get me excited!!

What I am thinking of is something that looks like rocket blasts, in paper piecing to pull the colours together. So many different star possibilities, kind of like Mariner's Compass Star, but smaller so it will show but not take away from the blocks. Or Compass Needle?

Looks like a fun project for you, and look forward to seeing the end results!

I am picturing solid black (or dark navy blue) as a basic but wide sashing. Then use that space to do some awesome quilting in a bright orange thread.

The quilt you made for his cousin shows an amazing grasp of colour matching, pattern and vision so I'm sure you will come up with something equally striking. Since you've chosen all those different colours to sash the blocks, what if you were to work with some sort of colour morph from one to the next from corner to corner.

The color morph is kinda what I'm envisioning.... Here's hoping I can do it....

I really want to see this when you're finished! The quilt you've already done is such a harmonious blend that I'm sure you will be equally pleased with the final result around these next six blocks. Rather than morphing diagonally, what about top to bottom?

A kid should sure like that with those bold colors and all.
