I need an idea for a 6" quilt block that would represent dancing. It's the last square I need for my 50th anniversary wall hanging. They love to dance, and I'd like to represent this by a square. I just can't come up with an idea that I have the skill to carry out.
Any suggestions anyone??? I thought up and created a Happy Home block and a Coffee Break block, so I need two more. Another question. They have lost one daughter to illness. I have two thoughts on how to represent this. One is to have an angel square. The other is to have the word "FAMILY" quilted on a square, and to have the outline of an angel represent the letter L. Would that be ok do you think? Or would it be tacky to include it? I helped my friend build a memorial garden for her deceased daughter and she has many angels in the garden. |
I made my parents a 50th anniversary album quilt. It included their 4 children and 9 grandchildren who each wrote sentiments in a block. I had a brother who was stillborn and wanted to include him so I appliqued an angel on the back of the quilt with his name and date.
Mom and Dad loved it :) So of course I don't think it's tacky at all !! It's a life that, in our case, was almost, but a little baby nonetheless and loved by us. |
It sounds like the angel would be a nice thing to do. Good luck!

As far as the dancing couple, here is a link to a dancing couple clip art. Could you either print it on a block or cut it out of black fabric and applique it on a block?
http://www.clker.com/clipart-9349.html I think the angel idea is wonderful also. Do you have an embroidery machine? Embroidery Library has some beautiful angel designs. |
If the family is open and talk about their deceased daughter, a block with an angel on it and her name embroidered on it somewhere would be an idea.
How about a block with the words "dance the night away" on it? It could be embroidered in a swirly movement. Maybe add a few musical notes on it too? |
I love the black applique couple idea!! and I could still add dance the night away to it!! I don't have a machine but I could do it by hand, I have fabric that has music notes on it that I could use.

I can see cartoon type dancers...thin like Olive Oil with her leg flipped up in the air and her partner Popeye type but not as muscles.

There is a saying and again I dont have it..it has the line dance as if noone is watching..it has more lines than that but surprise, surprise I dont know that either! It is a lovely idea and I think they would like it if you included their little angel on it too. Please do show pics once you have done it. |

Sounds great...and I don't think the angel idea is tacky...look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Interesting...as I was reading about the deseased family member I was thinking and angel too. What a wonderful quilt that will be when it's finished.
|
My sister had her "angel" tattoed on her breast. I think the angel is a wonderful symbol. As for the dancing - how about a pinwheel block?
|
Oh wouldn't a mini 5" dresden kaleidoscope block look wonderful for dancing??!!! Too bad you can't make just one. LOL. I glanced up at those in the sample boxes just above this window and thought boy, those look dancy. Especially that last one. I do love the clip art idea, just not sure my skills are up to that level of applique. I tried to find a more basic one but no luck so far.

If anyone in your family is artistic, have them draw a simple outline on some paperbacked fusible and you will have an original block. Maybe do the same way with the angel.
Would love to see a picture when it's finished. |
I like JudyG's clipart idea.I Think your ideas are wonderful.
