I got my old job back last week. And on top of that I just got a $260.00 Visa gift card for team of the year. Now quilt kit or fabric? Help me make up my mind please.

sewjoyce 02-11-2009 07:23 AM

Congratulations on getting your job back!!

Hmmm, quilt kit or fabric -- how about both??

Izy 02-11-2009 07:25 AM

Now, being a frugal person, I tend to think you would get much more for your dollars if you bought yardage Surely the cost of a kit includes all the precutting of fabric etc. BUT if you are wanting a treat and want all the cutting done for you then go ahead and buy a kit :D

Not much use was I????????

lyndawn 02-11-2009 07:50 AM

I would buy fabric. More for you money and if you shop around, you can probably get enough fabric for 2 quilts for the same price as most kits.

I do have to say that connecting threads doesn't overcharge for their kits, though most places charge way to much.

Barbm 02-11-2009 08:12 AM

WooHoo!!!!! You're employed again! What a great feeling!

How about some batting and thread- stuff you never can have enough of? And a splurge of some fabric. I say- watch out connecting threads- here she comes!

(Oh, Joann's online- get a bolt of batting- I got mine for like $165.00 before Christmas.) I figure I will get 20 quilts out of it. About 1 years worth. :)

Have fun spending it!!!!!

Barb

reneebobby 02-11-2009 08:32 AM

perfect good for you I would go jelly rolls. I like jelly rolls.

pocoellie 02-11-2009 04:07 PM

Congratulations on getting your old job back. Personally, I'd spend it on fabric or quilt related stuff I needed or use like blades versus a kit. I like to pick my own fabrics to go with whatever pattern I pick. But it's not my decision.

Jim's Gem 02-11-2009 04:14 PM

I would also go for the fabric. You might be able to get something on sale and get more bang for the buck! I love a bargain!

sewsewquilter 02-11-2009 04:18 PM

Congrats!!!!!!!!!! Buy both. :D Not any help, huh.

camillacamilla 02-11-2009 04:58 PM

Congrats! I like to buy quilting books, magazines, and fat quarters. Maybe treat yourself to some new quilting tools too- new cutting mat, templates, etc. Enjoy!

sharon b 02-11-2009 05:38 PM

Congrats on getting the job back ! WOO HOO  As for fabric or kit  Have you found a kit that just calls your name ? One you ahve been oggling for a while now? LOL If not get the fabric . Or maybe shop around and you can get both....

A lot of fun shopping :D then buy a bag of choclate...afterall its valentines day

gcathie 02-12-2009 05:31 AM

I too would go with Fabric unless the kit's are on sale....find you some good patterns you like and then buy your fabrics....much more fun picking out what you like color wise.....you be sure to have fun doing what ever you want and let us see your results...and congrads on your job....:-)

Bevanger 02-12-2009 05:55 AM

Congrats kiddo... Hrmmmmm I say fabric.... Seems to me you can get more

Barbm 02-12-2009 07:15 AM

Ruth is right! Forgot something to add- chocolate- the good stuff- some Cella's liquid center chocolate covered cherries would be nice. Just be careful not to get sticky hands on your fabric purchases. :)

Mousie 02-13-2009 11:14 AM

well, sharonb pretty much gave my answer. Stop for a minute and think...has there been something calling my name...doesn't have to be fabric or kits...although I can fully understand if it IS fabric calling to you. That's the voice I hear most often.
But if an answer to your question is what you really want, then I say, if you haven't seen a bee u ti ful kit that you hankered for but wouldn't pay the price for at the time,....I would go with fabrics cause repeating pete...you just plain get more.
Did we all go thru the depression or just afraid one is coming? lol. we just never get enough fabrics. woo hoo...a shopping spree, even if it ain't mine. show us all your goodies when you get home. happy shopping!!! :D

JANNY 02-13-2009 11:18 AM

Fabric by all means!!, But also buy something special for yourself, just to make you feel good.

frankie_casias 02-15-2009 08:04 AM

make something you want or need
good luck
frankie

Marguerite 02-15-2009 08:31 AM

Well I love fabric. Who doesn't. But you can buy fabric little by little any time. If you've got a good stash, opt for the kit. But you really should love it so much you make it immediately. Or, buy things for quilting you'd never be able to get or think of getting: new facy rulers, cutting mats, blades or nifty little specialty items for quilting that you may have thought to extravagant

weezie 02-15-2009 08:32 AM

Good for you on both the job and the gift card! If it were me.......first I would look long and hard at both quilt patterns and kits. Surely, if you do that, you will see the quilt you love and "have to have", whether it be a kit or a pattern that will require you to choose and purchase yard goods. It should be a lot of fun for you just looking for the pattern or kit that says, "buy me".

dmn369 02-15-2009 08:35 AM

My vote...fabric

Kara 02-15-2009 09:45 AM

joann hussey 02-15-2009 03:08 PM

How in the world do you get your DH to go into the fabric store with you? Mine sits in the car listening to the radio while I go into the shop. :?

joann hussey 02-16-2009 12:20 PM

My husband has taken me to fabric stores and wants to know "How long will you be"now is that just funny, who knows how long it takes to get inspired for another project so, he walks thru, goes to the car, reads , looks at his watch, see me come out smiling & happy, makes for a great day for both of us. LOL P.S. all the quilts that keep us warm all winter is the out come of being the lucky guy married to a quilter

alaskasunshine 02-16-2009 12:47 PM

We have been married for 32 years and 10 years ago I said to my husband, "you know honey I hunt with you, hike with you, I fish with you, I golf with you, What do you do with me?" I was really nice, not grumpy at all, just wondering. He pondered and said, "what would you like me to do with you?" I would like for you to quilt with me...you are my best friend, but you don't do my favorite hobby with me. Quickly he said when I get home I will make a quilt! ok? Well I scurried and made a quilt from Mc Calls quilting. It was called "The Smith House". I made it and got the fabric together for him to make one too. Well when he came home 1 1/2 weeks later. I had all his fabric in a pile and he was in shock.OmG he thought! He was so cute! He sat right down and made a beautiful quilt he cut and sewed and took several days to quilt. He got it all made so quick and I only had to rip a few times. Well he took it and put it in a zip lock and for about 8 or 9 years it sat. He was exhausted and said he had no idea quilting was such hard work! He had made the borders and just needed to be put on. He didn't want to do the pieced border but I said that's what make this quilt so pretty PLEASE do it like it shows HONEY!Finally it was time for our 30th anniversary. He asked if I knew where it was and I ran upstairs and got it and he said I want to finish it for you for our anniversary. I almost fell over!!!!!!! He did finish it and like a guy would do he said let's get it to a quilter tonight...we did. He got it back and looked at the magazine and I showed him how to hand sew the binding on and he sat for 3 nights sewing the back on by hand. I sat across the living room bewildered & thrilled. He finished it and gave it to me for our anniversary. It is on our bed now. I will ask him to help me with getting a picture posted!!! How do I do that?

So that is how I got my husband to care about quilting. In all honesty he has always gone with me to fabric shop. But I also have always gone with hin to gun shows and bought what he was looking for. It goes two ways!

Have a warm day...& Happy fabric shopping. Maybe ask your husband to go with you after a romantic dinner first! oooh la la la! Heck skip the fabric and get a couples massage...You gotta celebrate your job back!!!

Barbm 02-16-2009 12:56 PM

Gail- it stands in the closet. I just slide it out, roll off what I need and slide it back into the closet. Sometimes as I'm trying to figure out what to do I stand in front of it and stroke it. It's so soft.

It looks cool along side the tubs of fabric. And it's a bit of a testament to my "saving"- I couldn't buy it unless I had the cash to back it up so it shows me if I want something bad enough I can do it.
