Attention all you math oriented quilters! Help! The fabric I bought is really cute, but my focus fabric turned out to be rectangles. I don't know why I thought they were square (bought the fabric on line).

They measure 4 1/2" x 3 1/4". I want to cut them 1/4" bigger for seam allowances so that I get the whole center. I want to make star blocks with the focus fabric in the center. The finished size of the blocks can be from 12"-16" and don't have to be square.

Can anyone help? Thanking you in advance. :?

You could do a variation of the saw tooth star. Obviously your points would be different lengths, but you are starting with a rectangle for the center. I'm not necessarily good at the math but that's my idea. Check quilterscache.com for pattern ideas.

Get out your graph paper and start playing. Maybe a lopsided star? Or can you cut the rectangle down to 3 3/4--that would give you a 3 1/4' square center. Or how about setting it on point, would that help?
