I have a maltese, Suzey who is 14. She has allergies to a lot of things & gets a shot 2 times a week and still scratches . I would get a mut not a pure breed. She is very loveable tho and likes to sit beside or on anyone that will sit still!

I agree, animals come up with their own names, Brownie, Pit/Lab mix, became BoBo, Bear, Lab,border collie mix,became BooBoo, because of her dented forehead, Rodney is our chihauhau/pom mix, usually called Rotten Rodney or Rodinator (so spoiled) and we had a maltese named Snowy and another mixed malt/shitzu rescued from SPCA death row that we named T Rex. I agree that the maltese breed is the lovingest, but so are all the others. Not to mention another Pitt named Rudy, for Rudolf with a pink nose, Mandi Pandi, blk & wht peke, cats named Toy, blk & wht soccer ball, Mrs. Roper, talks (complains) alot like her former senior owner, and Missy Hissy Fit, a feral now tame, cat who bit my husband's finger and permanently disfigured it. We are animal lovers, can cha tell?

How wonderful that you are going to the shelters to find your NEW BEST FRIEND. We lost our granddog about 2 years ago. Our kids outgrew her so she came to live with grandpa & grandma. We had her for 9 years and she was the BEST DOG we ever had in our lives. She was an 11 pound mini-Schnauzer. They don't shed, they are small, needs a haircut about every 3 months, easy to bathe in the sink or bathtub and Schnauzer's have a wonderful disposition. They love everyone, love cuddles, don't do too much barking and are very, very smart. Just a suggestion for the breed we loved.

There are breed rescue organizations all over the place to help you find just the dog you want, also. Check these places out on the Internet or on PETFINDERS.com if the 2 dogs you are considering don't happen to work out for you. My friend had 3 Maltese...wonderful babies but pretty high maintenance. She had to brush and comb their hair (they don't shed, either) a couple times a day, put hair clips in their bangs to keep the hair out of their eyes, weekly bathing and just lots of things that I thought I probably wouldn't have time to do when I was working and now that I'm retired, I'd rather quilt than comb hair! :lol:

Because Dresden Plates are my favorite quilt blocks, how out "DRESDEN" for a name. Easy, probably better for a little boy dog than a girl but what the heck!

This is such a FUN thread for me. I need the smiles. Keep your great names coming! I add them to a list I set up on my computer's Word. You are all soooo clever!!

Sadly, we have to wait awhile now, dunno if 2 months or 10. We have to learn more about bankruptcy process. There are so many dogs in shelters due to owners going bankrupt... but not us. We WILL get a dog. We have a dilemma. On one hand, it may be harder to rent with a dog, yet we need daughters' sm dogs allowed (live too far to leave dog). On the other hand, I hear it's easier if they can see your dog first. And if we have months before moving, we'll have time in this house for our new baby to get used to us. And alarmingly, I've discovered many shelter/rescue places require you to have a fenced yard with access to it for the dog. Our townhome of 21yrs has a nice solid woodfenced patio with a dog dirt area 2yards sq between hottub&fence, next to waterfall/pond/ferns. Our last 2 small dogs freely used doggie door to go relieve or lie in the sun. The shelter home-inspector will see the complex' huge fenced area grassy for ball/frisbee games, picnics + we live near a maintained paved creekside for dogwalkers, babystrollers, bikes. We'd get approved in a nanosecond here, not so sure about an apt. So, a decision can't be made until we have a better idea of timing & cost of apts. I hate this. It's not our fault; DH was downsized from 3 jobs. This lousy carsales job income dropped to min wage. Also, my medical woes multiplied, 3 surgeries, so had to resign(then all but 4nurses there were let go). My income stopped. Don't believe news: banks are NOT helping the little guy.

Sundays, I uuu-and-ahhh at the cute dogs on the updated lists on Petfinder +shelter/rescues (up to 100mi away). When I informed the places of my 4 top choices we have a family crisis and must wait, they all reassured me, that sadly, there will still be plenty of dogs when I'm ready. ---to whomever suggested a mini-schnauzer... for 15yrs we enjoyed our Misty, then our sweet Sheltie, Blue, then our funny Sunny, Border Terrier. I loved my childhood Collie then Pom & DH, his Golden, then Samoyed. This time we'll choose by temperment and size.

I can't wait to again have a dog on my lap when sewing or under my cutting table again.... Quilting with a dog is heaven to me!

I am sorry to hear you have to wait but it is understandable even though frustrating with all the financial issues and all - please keep the name "Feed Dogs" in mind - I love that name and it is the name of one of the local sewing groups here. Wasn't sure if I was going to suggest Feed Dog or Seam Ripper but both are catchy.

Cathy, my sister tells me to keep praying for her because my prayers always seem to work for her. I thank God He is no respecter of persons and for the fact that my sister believes my prayers work. If it does not offend you I will pray for you and your DH too.

I always welcome prayers. I do believe they work. The problem is we never know when or in what manner. Sometimes what we end up with isn't what we expected, or wanted or even considered. My situation just gets curiouser and curiouser, as Alice said about Wonderland.

That is so true. Sometimes I look up and say "What are you Thinking??" But somehow things seem to work out for the best, but I can never see that when I am in the middle of something like you are in now. Been there, know how you must be feeling. All I can say is just hold on and remember, Alice did finally come out to where she was suppose to be. You will to.

We were dog sitting my granddaughter's new chi-wa wa, (lol) she kept getting strings in her mouth so what do they call her. Pickles.

Good news! DH says I shouldn't wait after all, that I need a dog for therapy! I asked him what changed his mind. He said being home all yesterday. He saw me doing what I always do; just going about my business of housework, deskwork, napping. I'm not depressed or even moody, but apparently a lot more subdued when there's no dog to entertain me and want me to interact. I don't think he liked that when I went outside to ask him something, I was so shocked at the weather because without our dog or petsitting one of our daughter's dogs, I don't feel a need to go outside so can go all day without fresh air (we have no yard to sit in). He's worried that I might get depressed with my medical woes and our financial stresses regarding bankruptcy. I wouldn't, I never do, but hey, if him thinking it gets me a dog...! Sooo I have resumed my searching all the rescue shelters again. They update their websites on Sundays so I'll look hard then. Our only criteria are that I can lift it so no more than 10lbs yet not be too tiny so no less than 7lbs and that it be fun...people friendly, other dog friendly as well as enjoy my lap and be 6months - 3years old (so already housebroken). We don't care about breed, color, or gender.

So, please continue to add more great Quilting name ideas! Right now, I'm waiting for more info on a little chihuahua, if not too tiny. But since she's 3yrs old already, I'd let her keep her name with just a little change, from Kate to "Katie Q"..(Q being for Quilt of course). I got that idea from the Suzie Q suggestion here. DH's in general favorite is Patches or Patch, but that is dependent upon appearance. I don't really have a favorite, so many are good. Thanks again!

I'm so happy for you that you're going to get your dog a lot sooner than you thought!!!!! I know there is a perfect one out there just waiting for you...

I can't wait to hear about your new baby. We lost our wonderful Motley, a lab/basset mix, a couple of years ago. I had such a hole in my heart and I have a lump in my throat even now. After about 6 months we adopted Arlo, a red and white Basset Hound, from a Bassett rescue group. He is just wonderful and thinks he is a lap dog even though he weighs 70 pounds now. It took some time for him to feel secure because he had been mistreated. Now he owns us, the house, the yard, you get the idea, and just hugs and loves us.

Thanks for letting me share about my precious Arlo. I had Chihuahuas at home with my parents and they still have one now. They are the most loyal little things and so cute. I'm anxious to hear about your new pup, whatever the name. Patches is my favorite suggestion, but you'll know when the time is right. :-)

If the dog is young enough to be able to change the name Bobbin is still my favorite, LOL. but you all have to live with it and I know you will find the right name.
