Everyone is talking about using little snippets to make blocks then quilts. I've been quilting along time, and maybe spoiled. I never save TINY pcs, and i'm hearing all this about making these blocks. apparently, i'm throwing away a million quilts,can someone please explaine to me how to make a quilt out of these little snippets

I can't see saving anything smaller than 1" x 1". It's just not big enough to mess with.

Same here. I would have totes of snippets if I did.

I think in some cases, they put the itty bitty pieces on a wash away stabilizer, then stitch all over it to bind the pieces together into a single "sheet" of fabric.

Others do the same thing on foundation fabric like muslin.

The resulting "fabric" is then used as any other piece of cloth.

oh, i get you now, i ws under the impression they saved ALL scraps and somehow pcd. them tog. thankyou for clarifying this for me. i don't feel so badly anymore for throwing out scraps

i only throw away itty bitty edge cuts and anything smaller than 1/2"...the little pieces, smaller than a 2 1/2" piece i put into a box for the local preschool; they use them for collages and also make what they call treasure boxes...each child brings in a box with a lid (like a shoe box) and they put glue all over the sides and top of the box then cover them with fabric bits...the kids love making them it is one of their favorite craft projects.
i throw away strings/threads; but anything i think kids in school can find a use for i donate. teachers do not have budgets anymore to pick up supplies for their classes. you do not have to save so much there is a storage issue, when i get a box or basket full i just bag it up and drop it off. or i send to people here who are requesting scraps.
i need to live at least 200 more years to make a dent in my projects :) i have to pass some on...

I know the idea of using every scrap is to use it all up and save buying more fabric, go green, etc. but when you use foundation sheets or muslin to create new fabric aren't you buying more fabric? Also when I made tons of crumb blocks I needed to buy some solid colors to sash the blocks, so I saved bits of fabric in one place and bought new fabric in another. Just my input on saving really mini scraps. I rather sew some ugly fabric into a simple pillowcase and throw mini fabrics, batting, threads, etc. into and when filled it is a doggie or cat bed for the local animal shelter. May in Jersey

I agree with you May. Save a penny here, just to
spend a nickel there. (?) I don't save anything under a 2 inch square, thats about the smallest size to use in a pieced quilt.
Quilters are very individualist people, and this topic has a lot of
different opinions. But we all make beautiful quilts whichever way we go about it. :thumbup:

There are lots of ways to use tiny scraps. I am a miniaturist and I use them for minis. My cut down method makes it easy to sew those pieces together and then cut out a square from the center. Check out my tutorials. I send out free templates from 4 1/2" down to 1". Once you sew and cut the squares you can use these "Blocks" to make quilt blocks and projects.

Also there is a crazy quilt method I call confusion but others call Crumbs. You just lay two pieces of scraps together and sew them together. Cut a straight edge and add another scrap. I sew 2 or 3 scaps together and then do several sets of these 2's and then sew the sets together. this is a great way to make crazy quilt fabrics and it is so easy to do!!

You can make quilt blocks with your Confusion or Crumb fabric but I like to make projects with mine
