Help! Need mitered binding tutorial????

Does anyone have or know of a good mitered binding tutorial or tips? I have a book with instructions but they are not doing it for me. I usually sew to the end turn my quilt and keep going.... Help!

I haven't tried it yet, but it looks so nice and neat and beautiful when she does it!

Make sure the quilt is squared up, and that you stop at the corner in the correct spot. If you seam allowance is 3/8", stop 3/8 from the edge. I usually mark the corner in the quilt. You can do it--if I can, you can. Just try it.

Thanks! I did my 1st quilt show in May and one of the critiques was that my binding wasnt mitered.... So i figured for this next show(this week) I should really figure it out... Ill check out the video..... Im sure Im over thinking it as I usually do!

Thanks!

Thank you, Jan. My mitered corners are fine, but I have trouble with connecting the ends with a bias seam. I printed your directions and will use them later today.

Here's another one I've successfully used to end my binding: http://pir8.freeservers.com/quilting...ding/index.htm

Here's my video on how to connect the beginning and end pieces with a mitered seam. My other 2 videos on the starting and making the corners are on youTube as well, but the quality is poor.

I wanted to find the glue tip that Sharon used on her binding tutorial. Guess what? The question came up on this board a few years ago! Anyhoo, since I live in Germany, i went straight to Amazon and found Roxanne's Glue Baste. Hope it works! I am sure I can find Elmer's washable school glue around here for refills.

I think Jan's method would probably be easier to learn. Sharon is certainly correct that the quality of the mitered corners is a major factor is judging. I have certainly heard this on quilts of mine and I have had more than my share of blues. Looking at Sharon's corners, I think mine come to a better point, probably because I cut the batting out (on a 45* angle) to make space for the binding to come to a sharp point. I have not used Sharon's glue method and might well try it for a flatter edge. I will re-emphasize that having the binding full and exact corners has made the difference for me between blues and no prize several times. I use a different method to achieve the same result of exact connections on binding ends. They are important too.

I posted a tutorial here once, but can't find it now. Tried to post it again, received an error message I think. PM me your email and I will send it as an attachment. It is a word doc. I use it to teach a binding class. No special tools, 3 pins, small ruler and a marking pencil.

Excellent videos - thanks for taking the time to make them.

Your directions are very good. I use the same method and my binding comes out pretty good most of the time.

Both Eleanor Burns and Kaye Wood have tutes on this subject that are super EASY.....

I use Sharon Chambers glue method. The way she folds the fabric to show you where to stop in the corners is the best part even if you dont use the glue

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 06-04-2012 07:46 PM

Holice has instructions posted on here. I have the printed and follow them exactly every time and it works. It's the only way that works for me and I have to read it every time ----- maybe I'm slow!

Missouri Quilt Co has a great one on utube. also if you google how to add binding it should come up

Wanted to correct the spelling of Sharons name

I thought I bookmarked the one I use, but cant find it. I do the one where you cut the end you're going to start with diagonally, then when you come back to it, you just tuck the other end into it and sew, easy peezy!

That was the best and easiest way to connect the binding ends I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing.

I just completed a quilt using this technique.... It came out perfect. The glue really does hold everything in place and washes right out, the corners are perfectly mitered, I measured and did everything just as she instructed. it was worth the time and this will be my standard binding technique moving forward.

Here's a tutorial from Missouri Star Quilting. It doesn't have so many steps but looks much easier to me:

I used this same video to bind my first baby quilt (see link)

and it worked great! She's very easy to follow and understand. Good luck!

Jenny at Missouri Star Quilt Co. has a really good one on Youtube. She is very good at explaining it.

I did it!!!! Not to shabby for my first try.... btw I absolutely LOVE the gluing method. Thank you all soooooo much for the tips and tuts!

The Quilting Place, LLC 06-06-2012 04:31 AM

Jan thanks for the great directions. I haven't had any trouble with my binding but after reading your directions I believe I can improve my technique. I don't trim the excess out when merging the 2 ends pieces together, like you do.

The Quilting Place, LLC 06-06-2012 04:33 AM

Not too bad, a little practice and you will be great. Happy Quilting

MimiBug123 06-06-2012 01:01 PM

You can do it! If you can make a quilt, the binding will be the least of your troubles!!!
