HELP NEEDED! — Petal shape triangle ruler by Darlene Zimmerman

For the life of me I do not understand the cutting chart or directions for Darlene Zimmermans Petal Shape Triangle ruler. If I cut a seven strip and cut the petals the full size, it looks like a nice curved Dresden. What do I do if I want smaller petals to start with?

I found this site that seems like it might answer most of your questions.

(I did follow the link to Simplicity from there but was unable to find anything under Darlene Zimmerman)

By smaller do you mean shorter, or skinnier/more petals? Longer/shorter is fairly easy, more petals would require a different ruler.

I don't have this ruler, but after looking at Iceblossoms' link, I may have come up with a solution to shorter petals. You would have to test my idea on scraps. After cutting strips a shorter width, line up the pointed end with the edge of fabric and cut petals. Then bring down the top of the curved edge of ruler to the other edge of fabric. This would mean moving the ruler to cut the other side of the curved shape. Clear as mud? Perhaps this pic will help.

My EQ7 has this pattern in it. It takes 8 petals to make a block. How big do you want your block to be? EQ doesn't realize that you applique your center onto a backing fabric so it does some funky stuff, but it will size the petals out for you as a template.
