In my spare time over the past several weeks, I have been cutting out squares for the 'windows' on the cathedral window quilt I'm planning. My goal is to make a king sized quilt without repeating a fabric in the windows! (My stash is nearly all fq's and 1/4 yard cuts!) I've started cutting squares of batiks, but I'm having second thoughts about mixing regular prints with the batiks in the same quilt. The ratio of regular prints to batiks is about 2 to 1. I think I have enough of the regular fabrics without adding the batiks. What are your thoughts on this?

I think that if you have a strong contrast, you can get away with almost anything. I'd lay them out before sewing together, to make sure like is far away from like, and tone apart from the same tone. We look at a quilt on the bed or hung on a wall as one piece with different "pieces" springing out at us. These should be sprinkled all over the quilt, not one big blob of color here and another color running into another.
A monotone is restful, but you said that nothing was going to be duplicated, or as I understood it.

I have started one too. Mine a a lot a batiks and other prints with some solids. I like it so far. I wanted a lot of variety in mine too. Are you using the tute on the board to do yours?

I say mix them in :) It sounds like you have enough batiks that you will have more than just a couple.

Thanks for your comments. Yes I am using Eddie's tute. So far it is working great. I've got some of the 'frames' put together, but no windows added yet. I love the scrappy look, but I have to do it in a "controlled" manner -- just can't bring myself to reach in a bag and use whatever comes up!!! Anyway, Littlehud, I really do like to way yours is looking, so will probably mix at least some of the batiks in. This is a great way to get reaquainted with your fabric stash!

As far as the tutorial is concerned, I'm wondering how maneuverable this whole thing will be when stitching in the frames around the window pieces as the quilt grows and grows and grows! I was planning to do a queen until DD reminded me her bed is a king!

I am doing mine in a 5 by 5 square so it doesn't get so bulky. Then I will join the big squares and finish the last seams windows. That way most of the time I'm working with a smaller area.
