Help Needed With Ideas...New to Quilting
I am a beginner quilter, one year new, and my young nephew has begged me to make him a quilt. He said, " I just want one western style with a bucking bull, Purdy please". I'm guessing I should find pictures of bucking bulls and applique them on a quilt but I don't know what kind of quilt, where to find a pattern for a western style quilt. I'm at a complete loss but how I can refuse his "Purdy please"?:D It needs to be easy...that's me saying Purdy please now!:o

Look for a picture of a cowboy on a bucking bull that has a good silhouette. Enlarge it as needed and do the appliqué in a dark solid colour. You could use a sandy marble background fabric and either machine or hand appliqué the silhouette to the background fabric.
There are companies that sell fabric silhouettes if you Google. Some even come laser cut with the fusible on the back already. The problem with those is you might not be able to find a bucking bull. |
Would you just do a large appliqued cowboy & bucking bull on the marbled fabric or would you also do some type of 4 patch around the applique? Thanks

Google images of "coloring pages of bucking bulls" You can use those to appliqué to 12" blocks. Then do alternating Variable Stars. Nothing says cowboy like stars. http://www.connectingthreads.com/tut...tars__d12.html

There are bunches of Texas quilts, lots of which have Western themes. Try googling them for ideas.

You could surround the bucking bull applique center with stars or 4 patches or anything maybe made with a western fabric or bandana looking fabric. would be cute.

Moda has a Texas themed line of fabric out that many of my fellow Texan quilters are enjoying working with. There might be something there that could help you. Just google that a bit and maybe something will strike your fancy?

Just for fun, I googled "bucking bull fabric" and I found all kinds of fabric that might work. There are even two pillow case sets that could be used as a "panel" in the center of a quilt.

If you were a wee bit intimidated (as I am) by most applique, you could find fabric with bucking bulls, fussy cut blocks and incorporate them into the pieced pattern or do some kind of pixelated bucking bull piecing with 1" squares to get one image on a "background" layer.
