Help is needed for a star block

I know this is silly but I need a 8" (finished) star block. I've made two blocks from Quilters cache and they've come up small. They both were paper pieced and came up at least an inch too small. All I need is a simple star block. What I was thinking was 4 - HST and a solid center. Question is.....What size do I make the HST to come up with a 8" block? (I need the block to be 8 1/2 unfinished) If someone could help me with the measurements I'd really appreciate it. I'm even open for a different idea. Just need a star block with the correct measurements.

Thanks for your help

Not any measurement you're going to be happy cutting.
The Friendship Star block, which is the name of the block you described, is here.

As you can see from the picture in the link, this block is based on a 3x3 grid, which does NOT divide evenly into 8".
If it were a 7.5" or 9" or 10.5" or 12" FINISHED block, it would have worked out perfectly.

How about a nice Sawtooth Star block - that's on a 4x4 grid, and would work wonderfully if you're trying to make an 8" FINISHED block.
It's a very easy block to make.

Here are cutting and sewing directions:

This is for an 8" block. Good luck.

You could try it this way as well:

Cut your background and center segments at 3.5 sq."
Cut your snowballs for the star points at 2.5" sq.

Sew together and you'll have a 9.5" block which you can then trim down to the exact size you need.
Be sure to keep the center of your star in the center of the block as you trim.:)

You ladies are so wonderful. I'm going to do one of these tonight, need it for tomorrow. I know nothing like waiting until the last minute but sometimes life just gets in the way. Thank you again.
