Help needed, using plush (cuddle) fleece as a backing on jean quilt, tips?
 

I am making a jean quilt (http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/projec...s-quilt_1.html) and I would like to back it with the plush fleece. Joann's calls it cuddle fleece. How would you finish the edges of the quilt? Also, would my best bet be to tie it and if so, what thread/yarn/floss would you use? They use yarn and 'quilt it' I love the look but I don't feel confident enough to do it. I thought tying it would be more forgiving. Thanks!

I would bind it with any available cotton of your perfered color, or maybe even some good flannel. You might match the binding to the yarn you tie with, if you choose to tie. When ever I tied, I used polyester yarn.

In the pattern they tell you to bind it with the Hot Pink Binding. If you do not want to do that, then I would make an "envelope". Sew the right sides together, leaving enough space to turn your quilt right side out. You need to iron/press the edges smooth, which can be a bit of a challenge. Then you need to stitch the opening left from turning closed.
Then you could go ahead and tie off your quilt. Usually people tie at all of the corners, however in this quilt the corners are not symmetrical, so you may want to create your own pattern in your ties.

I have used this method in the past when using cuddle fleece and it works well. I have done SID on machine rather than tie it though. Also, I sew around the outside edge (after it has been birthed and the opening has been hand sewn shut) about 1/2 inch from the edge just to give it a bit of a faux binding look - it also keeps those edges nice and tidy so there is no shifting.

Don't forget to post pictures when done. Would love to see your quilt as I was just thinking about that, or dreaming it, last night! Was picturing a rag quilt but then thought the denim would ravel but the fleece would not. Was trying to figure out how to make it so there wasn't so much bulk in the seams. I have a huge box of denim to use up.

Love the pattern...and think I will start collecting jeans to make one. Am following this thread for the answers to your questions. Thanks for posting.
