HELP. Oil Spot on Quilt
 

I am quilting a quilt top for a cousin, and while on the frame, my long arm sprayed a couple spots of oil, not bad, but I can see them. How do I get rid of them, or cover them up. I was thinking of maybe fabric paint to cover, but it might make it worse. If anybody can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

When I had grease on the Kona Snow of my double wedding ring, the board folks told me to use Dawn dish soap and hydrogen peroxide. It worked like a charm.

If you can't get the spots out, an applique might cover them up. It all depends on the quilt style.

If you are able to wash the quilt, just put a squirt of any kind of liquid dish soap on the spots and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. After that, put it in the washing machine and wash as usual. If it can't go in the washing machine, rinse it out under the tap to get all of the soap out. It should come out fine.

Dawn dish soap works great. I keep a bottle by my washer. No need to buy special stain removers.

When this happened to me recently I got lots of helpful advice here. rubbing the Dawn into it worked like a charm!!!

I have been told that shampoo will remove oil. I'm not sure if it works, but the theory is that shampoo is made to remove hair oil so should remove it. I think I would try the Dawn since they use it to remove oil from the birds that get trapped in the oil spills in the ocean, so it should work for this. I would be hesitant with peroxide since it is a bleaching agent and could remove the color from the quilt. Let us know what works for you.

Dawn is a great product for removing oil. If it doesn't work for any reason, try this product called Sew Clean. Some quilt stores carry it and it can be ordered online as well.

I was also going to suggest Dawn dish soap and hydrogen peroxide. I use that as my sole stain remover. Living on a ranch, it works on everything from after birth, to poo, to grass, to grease and oil. I use a 2 parts peroxide, 1 part soap, and if the stain is bad, add in some baking soda. I rub the stain gently with a tooth brush and let it set for a few minutes. Works wonderfully!!
