I want to do a D9P but I'm not sure what size to use as my squares. I have 4 tone on tones that match all the colors in the print fabric that I will be using in each corner of the block. I don't want the print to be cut in half. The problem is the print is a camping, fishing, hunting theme where all the print is not even for each print. Each picture is not centered with the next. I don't want to keep cutting half the bear or half the canoe or the lodge, ect to get my square. I want to able to see some of the full pictures in the squares. Does this make any sence to anyone?
Thanks, Kris |
Keep those squares on the outside 4 corners and they will not be cut you only cut through the middle squares. Make sense?

You have to "fussy cut" the squares so you don't cut bears in half. I would decide on the size of the squares based on your animals. If the biggest animal fits into a 5-inch window, for example, I would cut all the squares at 5-1/2 inches.
With the D9P the cut is made through the center squares so, as long as you keep the animal print squares in the corners, you should be fine. |
A lady at our quilt guild did a program on D9P. She had samples done from 2.5 inch squares up to 8 inch squares. The one I liked best was done with 5.5 or 6 inch squares. But they were all beautiful. I think you just go with the size that works best for your fabric.

You can decide your size by what size square works best for your focus fabric. Any size works, just keep your bears in the corners!
Have fun! |
Keep in mind you switch the fabric around so you will have to place some patterns upside down in the original 9 patch.

Hmm I remember having to do it once but now when I try it I don't have to I guess it makes a difference how you change your fabric around. So never mind on that comment. LOL
