A good friend of mine is teaching an art class in which she wants to reference folk art patterns and traditional quilt block patterns. Here's her request:

I'm looking for a traditional quilt pattern with square blocks and an interlocking/intertwining graphic pattern. I need it to illustrate a theme through art history, and how traditional crafters have taken up such themes without accessing the associated theories.

I feel like I've seen dozens of these quilt designs, but now that I'm looking for one, I'm coming up blank. Any tips?

I gave her the tessallating T block, which she says is on the right track. She's looking for interlocking patterns -- blocks where a secondary pattern emerges when the blocks are placed together.

IF you have patterns that demonstrate that, (with links is wonderful) I know she would greatly appreciate it.

TIA

The Quiltmaker's Gift would be a great resource.

Quilters cache would be another excellent resource for her. She can view the individual blocks and there are always pictures of several blocks put together that form the secondary pattern.

Storm at Sea, Log Cabin, Tennessee Waltz even the simple Kaleidoscope aka Wheel of Mystery block have interesting secondary patterns when the colors are placed correctly.
