Lovely quilt! Many ideas on here on how to fix this - I have no idea! I know I put silk flowers in the bathtub to wash, and then left them to dry...only to have stains in my tub. Since this lesson, I keep the silk flowers as far from anything as possible! Took a couple of weeks for that stain to leave the tub.

And the original blue dawn (no bleach) works great on dogs for fleas too.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I think you will all agree that the first thing to do is try to replicate the stain, both with the silk flowers and hopefully with a scrap of the red fabric. Then I'll try your suggestions for removing those stains before doing anything with the quilt. I want to do my best not to ruin the whole quilt since I have a lot of time and money invested in it. A local church group did the hand quilting and did a beautiful job. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Be careful of using dish soap. Some of them contain bleach and you may not want that.
I once had a pale peach cotton outfit. I got a coffee stain on it. Someone told me to use dish soap. So I put some on and while I was letting it soak, I told someone on the phone what I was doing. She asked me if I wan't afraid I'd bleach the fabric. Sure enough, now I had white spots on it. Since it was now white, I decided to bleach the whole outfit and have a white outfit instead of peach. Well, it was sewn with peach poly thread...the fabric all bleached out white but all the threads were showing. So I decided to color it peach with Rit dye. I put it in the pot and dyed it and it came out an ugly orange. So I put it back in the washing machine with bleach and it came out just perfect. So just keep trying stuff until you are happy. But, I don't think your quilt is ruined. This quilt is beautiful and I'd use it as is. The spot would make a good conversation piece. |
I use the blue Dawn and the Carbona stain removers for most stains. The Carbona stain removers come specific for certain catagories of stains. So far, these and Oxi Clean have worked for me for about every kind of stain. I worry a little about Oxi Clean because it sometimes seems to bleach things a little. I hope you are able to get the stains out. It is a beautiful quilt.
