help planning a carpenter star quilt

Has any done or seen a carpenter star quilt with many blocks?? All the ones I see are a single star and borders. I want to do a queen size but don't really want all that white space.

Draw it out on paper to see what it will look like. I am sure anything goes!

If you do a search here on this Board ... there's been several Carpenter Stars posted as full size bed quilts.

Also, you should find a link to a Double Carpenter Star pattern which you might find will help you deal with the white space you aren't liking.

This pattern has also been done in smaller block sizes, with each Star becoming one block, then putting several together for a quilt

Remember too, you can change your block size, which might help minimize the background for you, and increase the visibility of the colours in the star.

Or of course, Google ... and you'll find LOTS of info too!

mim,

Check out this woman's queen size Carpenter Star.

Check out her April 2011 posts and she shows you how she graphed it out. Hope this helps.

Use a pastel tone on tone instead of white. Maybe match the pattern of your colored pieces in the tonal. Roses or stars or verigateds or..............................

Background does not have to be white. I did two wall hangings - one had a chocolate background and the star was two tones of red, and then I did another with a black background and two tones of purple/turquoise. You just need to make sure your star colors pop off the background.

Danmar on this board made a gorgeous carpenter's star quilt. Each star was a 12" block. She also has a tute on how to make them. Look her up.

Thank you virtualbernie -- this is exactly what I needed. I printed out Danmars drawing and dimensions and also a variation -- Quilter7x 's avatar called center stage.

I am almost done with the fancy quilting on a queen size (another month) and the DJ I am making with the group here is a long term project. I want to get this one started -- at least get the fabrics I want before I pack to leave for Maine.

I designed one 101" square - it's got a triple star in the center, then a swath of plain strips, then a star border. I posted it in this message:

You can also do multiple diamonds in each point.
