Hi, I have finished the top of the black and white D9p for my DD and tomorrow will go shopping for the backing. She is happy for me to decide what fabric to use. I am not sure whether to go for a solid black or white, or to go for a black/white or white/black print. Also should I see if they have black batting - don't know if they do batting in black, or stick to white. I would appreciate your ideas please. I have, I hope, attached a picture of the top as it is at the moment. Thanks again.
Sue the binding will be a white/black print |
Depending on what you use for the back would dictate to me the color of the batting. If you go with a black back, then you would more than likely want the black batting. But if you go with a light backing, maybe a white on white, then definitely a white batting.

Gorgeous quilt. I do believe they make a black batting. Regarding the backing, maybe the grey marble that is in the quilt or the black and white print, not the one with circles.

I would use a print for the back. Also black and white, but different from the top. That way, it's 2 quilts, lol.
Ohhh, I just now saw the image. I would love the back in the black and white dots. Yes! |
Beautiful quilt!
I have seen black batting and I've also used black (and other colors)fleece as combination batting/backing. If it were my quilt, I'd use a black/white print for the backing unless I decided to just go with the black fleece. |
Yes, black batting is available. I would suggest that.
Also the small print would look good as backing. I would bind it with the more solid in the top. Or you could go wild and put a color on the backing. If you are hand quilting then the small print would cover up stitches. |
fleese would be oo heavy and hard to quilt.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Will see what the shop has in stock tomorrow and think about what you have all said. We are lucky to have three shops reasonably close by. I have already visited two of them when I bought the material for the top. None of them had a great selection of black and white, so I hope that the third shop will have a bigger selection. They are also very helpful for someone like me who is fairy new to quilting. I am worried that if I use a white batting, any stray black threads - how do you stop them showing LOL - from the fabric in the top may show through on the white border. I mean where stray ends unravel a bit, does that make sense? I will be machine quilting, fairly new but did meandering on my DS quilt.

It's a lovely quilt and yes you can get black batting, though you may not have as many options in the types of batting.
Backing, I see a white and black print ... more white, to give some brightness. And if you have a sense of flair and drama ... I would go for a bright coloured print, with s ome black in it, or a black background to it. Take a look at this quilt of mine, and you'll see a fabric I think would make for a lovely backing! http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-122204-1.htm |

I would use a small print black fabric.

yes there are some very nice black batts on the market- just remember to choose the batting that allows you to quilt it the way you want- some batts require dense quilting -some allow up to 10" between lines.

I would go with a bright, colorful, splashy print! lots of reds and oranges and blues (and purples!!!!)

I think that B&W dot in the quilt would be great or something similar to it. Polka dots always work!
Very nice top. What is DD favorite color? Slipping some of that into the back would be cool too! peace :D |
